Read more of this entry »Day one featured a great 800, where Ashley Maurer, Caitlin Hudson and Lisa Lungaro all finished within one-tenth of a second of each other. Jen Clayton, Sasha Richards, Charlotte Pope and Tonya Miller all turned in good performances as well.
Now for day two. I hardly know where to start.
Read more of this entry »After a busy day yesterday, let’s take a look and see what happened at qualifiers yesterday as we prepare for today’s events:
Lawrence Campbell looks like he’s peaking at the right time again. The 1:54 he ran yesterday in the 800 was real impressive. He jumped out to the lead and just controlled race. Aki Bajulaiye of New Rochelle finished in 1:56 and was right there with him, but he was never able to make a serious run at the Peekskill senior. But they both qualify for states.

Read more of this entry »With state qualifiers coming up at the end of the week, I figured we could take a look at some of the more surprising stars of the season. I tried to limit my number to five athletes, so if there is anyone you think should be mentioned, feel free to write them down.
Before I go down my list I want to go over the ground rules of how I picked them. Anyone who was hurt for any part of the season, but was a big time athlete in the winter or the fall does not qualify. Anyone who was on the all county or all star first team for individual events does not qualify. I hope that helps.

At the meet yesterday Brian McGovern again showed why he is the heavy favorite to win the state title in the pole vault. He cleared 16 feet with no problem. He does the same thing at every meet, he wins the event, sets the meet record and then goes for the state record. I think that’s great, and one of these times he’s going to set the state record. I thought he had it yesterday. On his second attempt to clear 16-6, he was definitely over the bar and on the way down he clipped it whit his elbow.
Read more of this entry »So, what to make of the Class A meet? Well, for one it was pretty long. And there are a lot of Class A schools in section 1, a lot more than you realize, but that makes for a lot of talent and very good meet.
Boys points:
Ramapo won the section as the team continued its success from the winter. Even with the team not performing to expectations they still won. Mike Abelard still isn’t 100 percent, but he ran admirably. Then you have Kevin Malviert. He ran well, but had a tight hamstring most of the day. He lost out to Jesse Drinks of Ossining which was one of the bigger surprises of the meet. Drinks has been having a good season, but he ran great today, To win in 10.5 is exceptional. Then to have Zach Curtin win the 200 was another shocker. Again, the Yorktown runner has been having a good season, but that was a great race, 21.9. Those two guys ran great and there’s nothing Ramapo could have done about those races, but to still come away with the victory is impressive.
Read more of this entry »A few quick interesting notes: Elizabeth Mott continued a terrific senior year by breaking the outdoor record in the 400 meters, running 54.0. Mott seems to really be peaking in this event and she’ll be one of the favorites at states.
Both Jen and Janelle Clayton were attending their brother’s college graduation and were not at the meet. When I left, New Rochelle looked to be in good position to take the team title, and that’s no surprise considering how many points the Mounties figure to lose not having Jen and Janelle.
Speaking of New Rochelle, coach Andy Capellan recently let me know that Aisha Chisholm will attend Robert Morris next year on a full scholarship. Chisholm is an excellent jumper and a versatile athlete. I’m sure she’ll do great next year. As for Cap, he just keeps churning out these high quality track and field athletes.
Dan will post his thoughts on the meet later tonight, so stay tuned!
Here we go, my picks for the Class B meet (boys):
1. Somers - The team barely got by Harrison in the county meet and with John Turro back at full strength or close to full strength and with Pat Porteus, Viny Cascio, Todd Apgar, and Pat Hashmall this team should have enough distance runners to come away with another victory.
2. Harrison – Very much like Somers, this team just got back a valuable athlete in Claudio Delli Carpini. This team probably has the best sprinters in class B and they should be able to accumulate a lot of points in that and the field events. Thirty seven of the 39 points the team scored out counties came in either the sprinting events (any event under 400 meters) and the field events, specifically the long jump and triple jump. Don’t be surprised if they beat Somers, they were close last week and could pull off the upset.
Read more of this entry »Okay, here we go, round two of my picks. Last week I wasn’t great in Westchester, but I was pretty decent in Rockland, now let’s mix the two together and see what we come up with:
1. Ramapo: The team won the county title without Abelard and if he runs at sectionals there would just be a larger margin of victory. Malivert, Padilla, Chidi and Dozie Ezemma, Hendrick, Payen they’re among the best in the section in their events. This was an easy pick.
2. Suffern: The Mounties had a great county meet making it a lot closer than what was expected. Sectionals will be tougher because they are going against a lot of really good distance runners, most notably Scarsdale. They have had a real good season and I see no reason why it shouldn’t continue.
3. Scarsdale: It will be between them and Suffern for second place. This should be a really interesting match up because both teams have a similar strength, distance. Obviously the two teams have quality athletes in the sprinting and field events, which could determine who comes out on top.
4. New Rochelle: It had a rough day at counties, but with a full roster this team should be able to compete. They have a lot of athletes so getting points won’t be a factor, but its strength is Ramapo’s strength so that could hurt this team.
5. North Rockland: Having athletes place won’t be a problem, but like last week, this team will have a tough time getting a lot of points. The Red Raiders will be up there in because they will have a lot of athletes scoring, but it probably won’t be enough.
Let’s see if I have better luck this time than last week. See you at White Plains…
I was speaking to Britney Clarke last night about her decision to attend the University of Miami, and I got to thinking that a bunch of area girls will be competing at high profile programs next year. I made a list in my head, and I want to add to that list (which you’ll find below) by asking you guys to respond to this post with any seniors you know of that are going to compete in college next year. I’m looking forward to your responses. Thanks!
Kristin Reese, Carmel (Stanford)
Elizabeth Mott, New Rochelle (North Carolina)
Josalyn White, Ossining (Vanderbilt)
Avery Faeth, Somers (Virginia)
Megan Faeth Somers, (Dartmouth)
Heidy Palacios, Saunders (Manhattan)
Britney Clarke, North Rockland (Miami)
Here’s another one I just received word on:
Lori Rendos, Clarkstown South (West Virginia)
And as you can see below, another Clarkstown South athlete will be competing in the fall:
Michelle Eberhart, Clarkstown South, Binghamton
I noticed that people were not to happy about Iona Prep winning the county title. I figured I’d give you my opinion on the blog and see what you think.
I completely understand where the public schools are coming from. Iona is a Catholic school that can get students all throughout Westchester and the Bronx to attend its school. While these other teams are relegated to its specific area. Scarsdale can only get athletes from Scarsdale, New Rochelle from New Rochelle and so on.
However, when Iona Prep is bad or Kennedy is bad no one cares. It’s only when these teams are good that people knock them. The Gaels have a good team, but they’re not unbeatable. This past weekend the team had a great meet. They dominated from beginning to end. The indoor season was real close, and New Rochelle or Scarsdale could have easily won that meet.
Should Iona be allowed to compete in the county championships? Read more of this entry »
Yesterday was a rough day, I’m speaking of course about myself.
First, I locked myself out of my apartment, and my cell phone is inside so I have no means of contacting anybody, then I go to the Westchester county meet, where I’m hoping my prediction on the boys side hold true. Just a reminder this is what I had: New Rochelle, Iona Prep, Scarsdale, Mount Vernon and then Somers.
This is the order the teams finished: Iona Prep, Scarsdale, New Rochelle, Roosevelt, Mount Vernon; Somers finished sixth.
Read more of this entry »Up until about 3 o’ clock today, it looked like the Rockland championship meet was going to happen. But, the meet was postponed until tomorrow, starting at 10 a.m.
After watching the athletes struggle through the inclement weather last Friday at Loucks, I think pushing the meet back was a really good call. As much as it’s a pain to bring everyone back a day later, it’s dangerous to have people running and jumping in this kind of (miserable) weather. I also think that competition in good weather brings out the athletes and teams that are truly the best.
So we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see which teams prevail in Rockland. Should be a great meet, I look forward to seeing everyone out at TZ.
With the Westchester county meet only a few days away I decided to stop keeping you all in suspense. Now that I’m about to unveil my predictions (for the boys) you all can go to your nearest OTB and lock it up. That being said, I’ve been trying to come up with these predictions for a few days. This meet will be pretty tough to predict. But here we go:
1. New Rochelle – I’m sure Coach Gallino is ecstatic I picked her team to win the county (I picked them to win in the indoor season, they finished second). Sorry coach, but I just like how the team’s competing. Winning leagues was impressive, I know I’m probably putting to much stock into that one meet, but let’s roll the dice on them a litte bit. I like teams that seem to be on a roll and they look pretty good. I know they lost Lewis, but I think they’ve had a real solid season and it should continue.
Read more of this entry »Here’s a link to those rankings.
Clearly, North Rockland has the best chance to upset Suffern. But for that to happen, the Red Raiders will need to beat the Mounties head to head in any event where it’s feesible. For instance, if Britney Clarke and Jen Clayton both run the 200, Clarke needs to beat her (and finish first). The Red Raiders need every point possible to pull off the upset.
With those thoughts in mind, let me give you my top five.
1. Suffern – OK, so kill me for going chalk here. If there was any doubt about how good this team is (which I don’t think there was) it was washed away when it scored the most points of any team at Loucks. With the two Claytons and Greany, Suffern comes into a meet with star power that no team can match.
2. North Rockland – This is a really, really good team. In a lot of counties North Rockland would be a huge favorite in a meet like this. It just so happens that they compete in a county with a great team.
3. Clarkstown South – The Vikings will score their share of points because they have a few athletes who are among the best in the Section in their events. Michelle Eberhart is coming off a win in the triple jump at Loucks, and Lori Rendos (pole vault) and Devon Coulter (race walk) should finish in the top two or three in their events. Lauren Schlanger has the best discus mark in Rockland this year, so the Vikings will count on her for some points as well.
4. Pearl River – Watch out for this team in the future. A lot of coach Dan Doherty’s best talent is only in 8th or 9th grade. The Pirates are still probably too young to crack the top 3 at counties, but they have a bright future.
5. Tappan Zee – They don’t quite have the depth to compete for the title, but with Emma Miller-Bedell and Sara Graney, the Dutchies will score some points.
The Doc Rasbeck Relays were held Saturday at Irvington. The meet has good tradition and drew some excellent athletes this year. Below are the meet results for girls in Class I. Class II and II, and boys, will be up soon.

OK, so here are my long awaited predictions for the top five finishers on the boys side:
1. Ramapo: I know I’m really going out on a limb here. They have so much talent they will dominate a handful of events and score enough points everywhere else to win their second straight county title.
2. Suffern: That second place finish at leagues really impressed me. The Mounties have a lot of talented runners and they should score enough points to claim second place. The emergence of Dom McEnery and Jesse Sarka should give this team enough diversity to do well.
3. North Rockland: The Red Raiders haven’t had that impressive of a season. They have a lot of depth and should score in a lot of events, but I don’t know how many points they’ll score in some of these events. They will lack the big scorers needed to make a serious threat. Who will get them 20-30 points?
4. Spring Valley: Its strength is the same as Ramapo’s strength. A lot of really talented sprinters, but the Tigers should pick up points that Ramapo doesn’t get in the 1, 2, 4 and the relays.
5. Clarkstown South: The injury to Antoine McGill is brutal. I’m not sure how serious it is, but if he can’t compete then the Vikings are in trouble. You’re taking out of the lineup someone who can not only score but win three events on his own. Not to mention being a team leader.
Sorry for the late post, I went up to Boston after Loucks, and one of the city’s more famous bands, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones inspired me for the title of this post. Now The impression that I get:
Kristin Reese is on a roll. This weekend at Loucks she was running like a state champion. To win the 800 and 1,600 in back to back days is tough enough, but it’s the way that she did it. She was in control the whole way. Even yesterday with Shelby Greany running off her back shoulder, it never looked like she was in trouble. She said winning the 800 on Friday gave her confidence, now she won the 1,600 to go along with that. And both times were impressive, 2:11 in the 8 and 4:51 in the 16, she is already having a good season, but this could be a monster season.
Pole vaulting is always such a weird event. Sometimes jumpers look so good and then other times they just can’t get over the bar at any height. Brian McGovern had that problem at Penn, but he can potentially clear 16 feet. He cleared 15-7 yesterday and looked great doing it. He cleared it on his first jump, but he no heighted at Penn and it took him three times to clear 14. Then on 15-7 he cleared it in one shot. I think by the end of the season he should be clearing 16.
You know what impresses me about Ramapo; it’s their determination. Coming down the final straight away if one of these guys are tied or close with another runner I expect them to win. It happened again yesterday in the 1,600 relay. Chidi Ezemma had the lead lost it in the first 200, it looked like he was broken, but then around the final turn he comes back and passes the kid from Colonie.
Elizabeth Mott ran two really good times in the hurdles. She is not content with her times yet this season, but she is definitely getting better each meet.
I’ll be back tomorrow to talk about counties…see you then…

Who do you think could have a big meet at Loucks this weekend? Here are my picks of people to stand out:
Kevin Malivert: The Ramapo junior was the indoor state champion in the 55, and has the fastest time this season in the 100. He’s also on the fastest relay teams in the state.
Antoine McGill: He could be the best athlete in the section, and I don’t mean just in track and field. He is one of the top athletes in each sport he competes in. He has the potential to just explode at any meet, and this could be one of those meets.
Watch out for the pole vault. Aaron Konigsberg of Hackley and Brian McGovern of MSM will be going head to head at Loucks and this could be a preview of the state meet. McGovern has the better jumps this season, but Konigsberg may be more consistent. Aaron’s also coming off a throw of 199 feet in the javelin at Somers.
This could be the meet that Aki Bajulaiye cements himself as one of the better runners in the section.
Watch for Fordham Prep! The 1,600 relay of Wayne Seaton, Bruce Grant, Carlos Petrovic and Zach Keefer are among the best in the section. There 3,200 relay team running 7:53 at penn was no fluke either.
Julian Sheinbaum and Nelson Hall could potentially have big meets. Keep an eye out for those two.
Girls to watch for:
Jen Clayton: This is an obvious choice. She’s the best female athlete in the section. We’ll see how she does this weekend. She’s obviously the favorite heading into Loucks.
Shelby Greany: She’s such a great distance runner, and now she’s going to be running the steeplechase. She runs with such ease it’s almost a surprise when she doesn’t win.
Kristen Reese: The Carmel senior has the ability to control and dominate a race like nobody I’ve seen.
Elizabeth Mott: She should be hitting her stride by now. It seems that hurdle runners always take longer to get into a groove than some of the other athletes.
Sasha Richards: Eric really thinks she could have a big meet. She runs really well, and is always under the radar. This is the meet where she could really show her talent against some of the best runners she’ll run against.
Now that you know my predictions for the meet…. Who else should we keep an eye on?
