Friday at Loucks

Well, I got back from Loucks a little while ago, and after taking about half an hour to dry myself off, I’m finally ready to make a blog post. The weather was, to put it mildly, awful. But some of Section 1’s best were excellent nonetheless.Kristin Reese ran a really smart 800 meters. Reese, who is usually best as a frontrunner, got boxed in early and looked like she might be in some trouble early. But she was patient, waited for just the right moment and then made her move. She shot to the front with 100 meters left and cruised to the victory.Kevin Malivert might be the most impressive athlete to watch in the section. The Ramapo junior is so compact and so fast, he looks like raw power personified on the track. Malivert won the 100-meter dash today and continues to make his case as the best sprinter in the state.Sasha Richards, the Mount Vernon senior, won the girls 100. Richards, who was coming off a sweep of the 100 and 200 at Somers last weekend, is having a fantastic early season. She continues to impress me and I’m at the point now where I would have to say, as far as pure sprinters go, she might be the best in Section 1.Just want to take a second to wish Antoine McGill all the best. He tweaked his knee in the long jump and I’m hoping the injury isn’t serious. He’s a great kid, always easy to talk to and a great athlete. Hope to see him competing in the 110 hurdles tomorrow.Speaking of tomorrow, the rain today caused some events to be moved to Saturday, which means an already full slate will be even more packed tomorrow. Dan Marra will be out at White Plains, so be sure to check back on the blog for his thoughts after the meet. One quick note about the meet: the new facilities at White Plains High School are beautiful. The track, the turf, everything is really top notch.41st Glenn D. Dan Marra began working for the Journal News this past September. He graduated from Manhattan College in 2004 and from John F. Kennedy High School in 2000. While at Kennedy, he ran cross-country and track. He is excited to be covering the sport that he participated in throughout his four years in high school. Dan loves all sports, but has, what some may say, an unhealthy obsession with the New York Giants.
Matthew Ng has been with Varsity Central and The Journal News sports department for the past two years handling high school beats such as skiing, bowling, girls soccer and tennis. Ng is a 2004 graduate of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School with his major in broadcast journalism.
Casey Tolfree spent her high school career playing Section 1 sports at Dobbs Ferry and is excited to have the opportunity to cover them for the Journal News. After graduating from St. John's University, Casey joined the Journal News staff in December 2007 and has covered a variety of sports including basketball, softball, and volleyball.

Excellent report Eric. Keep up the good work. The Journal News track coverage and it’s overall coverage of local sports has improved greatly.
