The impression that I get…

Sorry for the late post, I went up to Boston after Loucks, and one of the city’s more famous bands, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones inspired me for the title of this post. Now The impression that I get:
Kristin Reese is on a roll. This weekend at Loucks she was running like a state champion. To win the 800 and 1,600 in back to back days is tough enough, but it’s the way that she did it. She was in control the whole way. Even yesterday with Shelby Greany running off her back shoulder, it never looked like she was in trouble. She said winning the 800 on Friday gave her confidence, now she won the 1,600 to go along with that. And both times were impressive, 2:11 in the 8 and 4:51 in the 16, she is already having a good season, but this could be a monster season.
Pole vaulting is always such a weird event. Sometimes jumpers look so good and then other times they just can’t get over the bar at any height. Brian McGovern had that problem at Penn, but he can potentially clear 16 feet. He cleared 15-7 yesterday and looked great doing it. He cleared it on his first jump, but he no heighted at Penn and it took him three times to clear 14. Then on 15-7 he cleared it in one shot. I think by the end of the season he should be clearing 16.
You know what impresses me about Ramapo; it’s their determination. Coming down the final straight away if one of these guys are tied or close with another runner I expect them to win. It happened again yesterday in the 1,600 relay. Chidi Ezemma had the lead lost it in the first 200, it looked like he was broken, but then around the final turn he comes back and passes the kid from Colonie.
Elizabeth Mott ran two really good times in the hurdles. She is not content with her times yet this season, but she is definitely getting better each meet.
I’ll be back tomorrow to talk about counties…see you then…

Ramapo had a great day, taking the Boy’s Team trophy and The Combined team trophy. They won the 100m 4×100mrelay,the 400m relay and took second in the shotput, 400m and 400m hurdles. It was a great win even with Hendrick Jean or Mike Abelard competing.Kevin Malivert walked away with three 1st place trophies. The competition was great and Troy Faulkner from Curtis, put on a show.Looking foward to Counties!
Kristin Reese did indeed run well in the 1600 but just because she never “looked like she was in trouble” kind of infers that the race was not exciting to watch. To the contrary, after one lap it was clear that Reese and Shelby Greany were going to duel to the very end, and with their talent level, no one knew what was in store for the end. For the next three laps they matched strides until the end of the final turn, when Greany tried to make a move but just couldn’t pass Reese down the stretch.
In the boys 1600, there was an equally exciting race between Half Hollow Hills’ Kyle Merber and Scarsdale’s Julian Sheinbaum. After watching Merber lead the pack with a blistering 61 second first quarter, Sheinbaum slowly caught up with each lap and didn’t move into second place until far into the third lap. On the gun lap, he stayed with Merber as Merber tried to pull away and made his move just before the end of the final curve, about 120 meters to go, a place where his kick is usually effective. But Merber had a good kick of his own and Sheinbaum couldn’t close the gap, falling short by less than a second.
All in all, both 1600 races gave fans in the stands a great show and congrats to all who participated in those races.
Timster,I agree, I think the two 1,600 races might have been the most exciting. With Kristin, not to make it sound like the race wasn’t exciting, but how she controlled the race from beginning to end. It was exciting because Shelby was right there, but I never thought the race was in doubt, that’s how impressive I thought Reese looked.
In the boys, I think Julian had Merber with about 200 to go, he started to go and then stopped. I thought that was his opportunity. Then he fell too far behind as both runners kicked to the finish line.
