The running world in the Lower Hudson Valley

Looking ahead…

With the Westchester county meet only a few days away I decided to stop keeping you all in suspense. Now that I’m about to unveil my predictions (for the boys) you all can go to your nearest OTB and lock it up. That being said, I’ve been trying to come up with these predictions for a few days. This meet will be pretty tough to predict. But here we go:

1. New Rochelle – I’m sure Coach Gallino is ecstatic I picked her team to win the county (I picked them to win in the indoor season, they finished second). Sorry coach, but I just like how the team’s competing. Winning leagues was impressive, I know I’m probably putting to much stock into that one meet, but let’s roll the dice on them a litte bit. I like teams that seem to be on a roll and they look pretty good. I know they lost Lewis, but I think they’ve had a real solid season and it should continue.

2. Iona Prep – Maybe I’m not giving them enough respect, but I think the Gaels will fall just short. I know they are going to score in most events, but there are more athletes that are goimore->ng to score and take some points away. And with the closeness of the indoor county meet, I think they could easily win it, but in the spring I don’t know. I think they’ll be there in the end, but they won’t get enough points.

3. Scarsdale – Its strength is its distance runners. And I feel it’s so tough to win with that being your strength. I know they have Caleb Duncanson and Nelson Hall in the middle distance and some of the field events, but I think it’ll be too tough to win. Sure they’ll win the distance events, but will they get enough points in the other events?

4. Mount Vernon – I would watch out for this team. No one team can match their strength in the sprinting events. Dashe Winslow, Clarence Harrison, Casey Williams and Jordan Pollock could get this team a lot of points. What they need to do is have some other athletes steal some points in some of the other events and win the events they’re supposed to.

5. Somers – This is the best team from class B, and if they finished fifth in the county that would be pretty impressive. With Turro back and Porteus running well this team has a lot of talent in the distance events. But again those are the toughest events to score points in. The Tuskers will have a good meet, anything better than 5th would be exceptional for this team.

This should be a pretty competitive meet. Now that you see my picks, you better hurry and place your bets. See you then…
