Here we go, my picks for the Class B meet (boys):
1. Somers - The team barely got by Harrison in the county meet and with John Turro back at full strength or close to full strength and with Pat Porteus, Viny Cascio, Todd Apgar, and Pat Hashmall this team should have enough distance runners to come away with another victory.
2. Harrison – Very much like Somers, this team just got back a valuable athlete in Claudio Delli Carpini. This team probably has the best sprinters in class B and they should be able to accumulate a lot of points in that and the field events. Thirty seven of the 39 points the team scored out counties came in either the sprinting events (any event under 400 meters) and the field events, specifically the long jump and triple jump. Don’t be surprised if they beat Somers, they were close last week and could pull off the upset.
3. Irvington – This team has a chance to take home the section title. They have the best field athletes in Class B. At counties, 20 of their 29 points came from the field events. Each team in Class B has its specific strength. It will come down to who will be able to utilize it more.
4. Pearl River – Obviously they have Mike Hickey, Pat Keane and Pat Scognamiglio. Those three are the best athletes on the team and will be relied heavily to pick up as many points as they can. Unfortunately, with the team’s strength being distance it’s hard for some of these runners to do multiple events.
5. Hen Hud – Zach Weisbrot and Cal Reuter are the team’s two best athletes. They will need to find a few more runners to dethrone Somers. Even though this team is a long shot to win the section, they should not be counted out.
Overall, I think Somers is the best team, this year. Harrison has a lot of talent and could be the team to beat next year, I’m going to give Somers the advantage with its depth and senior leadership. It promises to be one of the more closely contested sectional championships.
