The running world in the Lower Hudson Valley

Surprised? (continued)

May

Continuing with Dan’s theme and using his same set of parameters, here are some surprise athletes on the girls side.

• Sam Spindel of Brewster has had a terrific season in the discus. She currently has the best throw in the section all spring at 128-6, which is also No. 5 in New York state.

• Tappan Zee freshman Caile Kohlbrenner has shown improvement all year and ran a nice 800 this past weekend at the Class B championship. Following in the steps of Sara Graney and Emma Miller-Bedell, Kohlbrenner looks like an up and coming star.

• I don’t know if this is a huge surprise, but Pearl River freshman Chelsea Kushner is starting to really come into her own. Kushner was instrumental in the Pirates’ Class B title, and her dominant 1,500 is probably one of the best races I’ve seen her run.

• Anjelique Parnell, a Hackley sophomore, has jumped on my radar screen over the past few weeks with some impressive performances. Parnell ran 12.13 in the finals of the 100 at the NYAIS championships to finish second and has also posted good marks in the 200 and long jump. That 12.13 she ran last week puts her seventh in the state right now.

• New Rochelle’s Tameekia Cooper set three personal records over the course of the spring, including two at the Class A meet last week, where she PR’d in the long jump and 100 hurdles. Cooper PR’d in the 800 at Loucks, where she also posted a score of 2,803 in the pentathlon, good for 15th in the state this season. The junior is top 20 in the state in the pent, long jump, and 100 hurdles. She will surely be one of coach Andy Capellan’s leaders next year.
