Fast Times at Warwick High

June
2

Tonight’s meet at Warwick High School was pretty impressive. The school is up in the middle of nowhere, I felt like that route 17 never ended, but I finally made it home. The track is great, even though rumor has it that it may only be 390 meters, but I guess they have to get those fast times somehow.

Here’s a look at what happened yesterday:

3,200: Fordham Prep was on point. They ran a great race. Zach Keefer, Carlos Petrovich, Harley Griffiths and Mike Jennings flew around the track. They finished in 7:47.35, an absolutely amazing time, it’s the fastest time in the state this season. The team beat out Chaminade and Kellenberg, two of the best 3,200 relay teams in the state. Jennings flew out of the box as soon as he got the baton and I thought he was going to hit the wall, but he didn’t. In fact, Jennings got stronger and outkicked Chaminade to the finish line. Fordham had to be looked at as the third or fourth best relay team in the race, and they won it.

If you look at the race overall, including Fordham Prep, section 1 had three teams under 7:53. Iona Prep (Ben Brink, Kyle Shepard, Mike Cunnigham and Sean Halpin) finished fifth in 7:51.58 and Scarsdale (Jacob Wexler, Miles Kirwin, Caleb Duncanson and Julian Sheinbaum) came in sixth in 7:52.43. The race was great and Fordham just stayed with Chaminade and Kellenberg the whole race, then Jennings took the lead around the final turn. He even expanded his lead down the final straightaway.

Bronxville (Caitlin Hudson, Olivia Bruton, Emma Clarke and Tori Flannery) finished third in 9:13.84. It was a real good race, but they were overshadowed a bit by the 8:55.61 time that Warwick Valley posted. Flannery and Clarke ran exceptionally well. Flannery was able to pick off runners the final 400 meters as she and Clarke looked real strong in the race. This team should be a lock in the Division II state title.

1,600 relay: Ramapo (Ryan Whitley, Mike Abelard, Chidi Ezemma and Dozie Ezemma) just missed setting the county record as they finished in 3:18.08. This team’s so close to breaking the 3:18 mark. They’re good enough that they should do it before the season ends.

North Rockland (Liz Cangialosi, Lisa Lungaro, Katherine Hekker and Britney Clarke) finished in second running 3:54.76. They ran a solid time and had a shot at Warwick Valley who won in 3:51.

400 relay: The Ramapo relay of Shaq Belizaire, Nick Padilla, Mike Abelard and Kevin Malivert won in 42.45. Again, this team should and will run faster, eventually breaking 42 seconds. Accorind to Malivert and Zotter they need to shore up their handoffs, which is definitely slowing them down a couple tenths of a second. They just need to tighten them up. Also, Abelard is still recovering from his hamstring injury, so the more he runs the more comfortable he’ll get.

Woodlands (Dominque Forbes, Diana Sanvail, Sharlene Chislom and Alexis Easterling came away with a victory in 49.54. The race was extremely close between Woodlands and Newburgh who finished in 49.56. But Easterling, who is having a fabulous season, stretched out a little further and got the win. Suffern didn’t run its 4×1 team. Apparently the Clayton sisters were suspended from school due to tardiness and may not be able to compete in the state meet, of course we’ll let you know more when we hear.

High jump: Apparently Jourdan White of Fordham Prep is back on track as he finished second in the high jump in 6-5, Sean Foster of Iona Prep finished third in 6-5. White qualified for states clearing 6-4, so he looks like he is starting to get into a groove in the event, While foster is continuing his real solid season as he’s an excellent high jumper and triple jumper.

Avery Faeth of Somers finished second as she cleared 5-2. She is just a great athlete. She’s an excellent thrower and jumper.

Shot put: Mike Letizia of Tappan Zee finished second with a throw 0f 48-2 1/4. Marvin Payen of Ramapo came in third in 47-8.

Somers’ Lauren Campbell finished third in 35-7 1/2, while Charlotte Pope of New Rochelle finished fourth in 34-9 1/2.

Pole vault: I waited around at Warwick with Chris Hunt, Tim Fulton and the Brian McGovern fan club to see if the Mount St. Michael senior could set the state record. Again he cleared 16-0, but again he just missed at setting the mark. This is the first time he had three really good attempts at clearing 16-6. He was over the bar twice and knocked it off on the other side. I really think he’s going to get it before the end of the season.

Tappan Zee’s Nicole Corey followed up her section record by clearing 11-0. It’s a nice follow up to what she accomplished a week ago.

Dan – Nice article and blog about Fast Times – how about those Catholic School teams takng the first five places in the boys 3200m relay. Total domination of the event – must be all those kids they recruit. LOL

  2. tuskers

how about somer’s, they finally put it together yesterday and ran a good race. especially turro, he went 1:53 which is the best he’s looked all season.

  3. Dan Marra

I actually didn’t have a final time on Somers, you know what it was? And I agree, Turro ran possibly his best race of the season.

  4. tuskers

    i believe they ran 7:53

  5. Magister Jacobus

    The real Bronxville splits were:
    Hudson 2:17.4
    Bruton 2:19.3
    Clarke 2:21.2
    Flannery 2:15.9

    9:13.8
Flannery got the baton in 4th, just ahead of Crean and passed the Valley Central anchor with 200 to go.
