Warwick recap

September
28

Okay, so let’s take a look at some of the results from the past weekend and try to figure out what to make of them. It wasn’t the most ideal weekend for running with the rain and mud, but I remember there were times I ran Bowdoin and it was snowing out.

Here’s a link to view the boys results at Warwick.

Suffern ran great in taking the Varsity I race with 55 points as Warwick (73) took second, Mahopac (121) five and Dobbs Ferry (128) six. Mike Periera had another strong race as he took 4th in 16:12. And it looks as though Johny Mitchell (10, 16:41), Tyler Frigge (11, 16:42) and Aidan Galasso (12, 16:43) are pretty formidable. Kevin McKenna can run better and if Terrence Galassois your 6th runner that’s pretty strong. A great follo-up performance to Suffern.

Mahopac still has a little ways to go. Joe Abed El Latiff (6, 16:20) and Jamesmahopac-runners.jpg McDonough (8, 16:33) will be up near the front all season, but the team needs to find some more consistency on the back end.

Dobbs Ferry is led by the Wortner brothers, Patrick (5, 16:20) and Brendan (13, 16:44) are real strong. The next three – Evan Fallor, Patrick Newman and Viktor Mashalov are real strong, finishing 35, 38 and 40, but if they could close the gap between them and Brendan this will be a real tough team. As of right now it’s a minute difference.

In the Varsity II, Scarsdale came in third with 104 points. Carmel (172) finished fourth and Horace Greely (175) fifth.

We all know Scarsdale has those three strong runners, Ilkyu Lee (4, 16:17), Sam Kohn (6, 16:22) and Miles Kirwin (18, 16:55), but it needs to build up the 4-6 runners. At least we know where this team stands after it avoided invitationals the first few weeks. It’ll be interesting how this team develops. It’s very good, but will it have the depth needed?

Carmel has a real strong team. Lucas Maher (15, 16:47) ran great, and the rest of the team is real solid. But I think in order for it to be a real challenge, Carmel needs to develop a top-10 runner or tighten the pack more. Right now it’s a good team, and that was a real strong performance over the weekend.

Henry Koster (7, 16:20) is developing into one of the better runners in the section, and he’s only a junior. The rest of the team didn’t have that great of a meet. The next fastest time behind Koster was over a minute later. That will need to improve in order for Greeley to cement itself as the top of the class.

Carmel (121), Greeley (141) and Clarkstown South (173) finished 4-6 in the Varsity I race. Ashley Maurer (7, 19:45) leads a strong Carmel team, while Jessica Tobin (2, 19:01) of Clarkstown South is one of the better runners in the section. Carmel has almost three minutes elapse from the time the first runner finishes to the 5th.

That time is 6 minutes for Clarkstown South. But Tobin is clearly proving that she can run with the better runners in the section and the county. She’s only a junior, and has been having an exceptional season.

Greeley is a very good pack-running team. Elizabeth O’Brien (21, 20:57) was the team’s first in and the fifth runner came in less than two minutes later. It’s a tightly grouped pack, which will keep this team in most meets.

Mahopac took third in the Varsity II race and 6th in the merged. This is another very good pack running team. But the difference is Mahopac can run a little faster, Katie DiBello (6, 20:15) can also be one of the top runners. And with six runners finishing with 65 seconds of each other this is going to be a very good team.

Scarsdale took 4th and have two very good runners up front with Alexandra Capello (13, 20:41) and Katrina Ricks (14, 20:42). The team needs to find some depth behind them.

Same thing with Hastings who took 7th. Nora Howe (17, 20:48) and Emma Sander (18, 20:49) are good, but the team needs more depth.

We didn’t report on this meet, so take a look and I’ll be back with some more info for you guys.

Somers boys and New Rochelle boys were both fifth in different races at the Ocean State Invitational in RI. Brewster girls ran well – Bronxville girls ran really well at VCP. There was lots of good running despite the weather. Should be some great races at Manhattan coming up.
