Iona Prep and Ursuline at Disney World

October

I just got off the phone with Jan Mitchell and found out that his Iona Prep and Ursuline teams won the small-school races at the 13th Annual Disney World XC Classic.

Senior Sean Halpin race the fastest time at the meet (16:07) on a 5K course taking first overall. His teammate Kyle Shephard was sixth (16:45).

Juniors Nick Athanasidy (17:33, 22nd), Vince Fellegara (18:01, 38th), Ayo Bajulaiye (18:08, 46th) rounded out the Gaels top-5.

Out of a field of over 50 teams, Iona’s win seems pretty impressive. The Halpin time is a lock for a National Silver Time and should even be a gold time. The course is described to be a little flat but that’s real fast.

The Ursuline girls finished first with 121 points and an average time of 20:55.04. The Koalas were without Katie Sullivan but freshman Mary O’Shea (8th, 19:56) stepped up top the challenge.
Mitchell thinks O’Shea reminds him of a young Rosie Crean.
“She just started getting serious into running this past April,” Mitchell said. “Sometimes she doesn’t realize how good she really is.”

The Koalas had three finishers in the top 20 with junior Jackie McCarthy (11th, 20:04) and sophomore Carlie Brittan (20:52, 18th). Ursuline juniors Ashley O’Sullivan (21:25, 30th) and Madie Federle (22:22, 56th) also ran well.

It’s a really good showing for a Ursuline team without Sullivan. I think that they really got a good confidence boost out of this win, getting solid contributions from some younger runners. Considering that all the Ursuline runners that did well today are underclassmen, the Koalas should be strong for years to come.
