Today in The Journal News

October
9

If you haven’t seen them already I wrote a notebook on the quick rebuilding process Somers went through. For Rockland it talks about the success Matt Panebianco has had this season. My last notebook talks about the determination of the Dobbs Ferry team.

On the girls’ side, Matt Ng wrote about the Tappan Zee’s success so far this season. In Westchester/Putnam his article is about the incredible season Ursuline’s Katie Sullivan has had.

TJN rankings (girls)

October
8

After you hopefully took a look at the boy’s rankings, I followed the same format for the boys. Sorry I’m a little late positng, but I’m in the office and we had Kevin Devaney and Joe Lombardi report on Varsity Central Live about the football games for this weekend. Then my email wasn’t working then Knicks preseason basketball was on and who could turn that off.

Anyway, here they are take a look and hopefully you’ll disagree:

Editor’s note- Revision- Mahopac’s position is unchanged but there is a correction

As the Manhattan Invitational slowly approaches I figured it’s a good time for another round of rankings. Let the debate begin:

Yesterday’s X-C meets (updated)

October
7

This was a crazy day with all the cross country meets. Take a look and see what you think. It’s kind of late so I’ll post some thoughts on the day tomorrow. Although North Rockland did beat Suffern heads up in their dual meet.

Take a look at the rest of the results:

Some Section 1 rankings

October
7

The armory posted its Section 1 rankings before I did. If you want to take a look click here.

I don’t want to comment on them too much because I will be doing my own in another day. But if you have any comments about them I’m all ears.

NY State rankings

October
7

Over at the armory they have the New York State rankings for week four. Click here to check them out.

Some quick highlights:

First with the boys: There are three Section 1 teams in the top 10 – North Rockland (4), Suffern (6) and Arlington (8). I don’t think you can really argue with the Class AA rankings. Shenendehowa is clearly the best team in the state. North Rockland is definitely right behind them. Suffern will have a hard time moving any higher until the team can prove it has a top flight runner that can break 17 at Sunken Meadow. Mahopac is out of the list completely and Scarsdale is on the bubble. Clearly Scarsdale is the next best team in the area in AA, but it needs to develop some more depth.

Some thoughts on the weekend

October
6

Alright after another busy weekend of Section 1 track I have some thoughts on some of the races and teams in the area. If I leave out anyone or any team please feel free post who and why. I tried to stick to meets we didn’t cover or haven’t written about yet. I’ll talk some more about Brewster a little later on.

St. Anthony’s

  • North Rockland is the best team in Section 1 and may very well be one of the best team in the state. The team dominated the St. Anthony’s invitational as it took first in the merge at Sunken Meadow. It has two outstanding runners in Nick Hughes (2nd, 16:43) and Chris Carrington (9th, 17:09). Then it has a 3rd and 4th runner that rival most teams top two in Charlie Lagos (10th, 17:11) and James Naglieri (11th, 17:11). That’s four runners in the top 11 in the merge. Then its fifth runner, Kevin Brophy also breaks 18 as he runs 17:49 to take 34th. That’s five runners about a minute apart all under 17:50. Very impressive. This could very well be a team that’s hoisting a sectional championship in another few weeks.

I covered the Brewster Bear Classic yesterday and wrote a story about Brewster’s Miriam Munn, Ariana Bottalico and having a bunch of 1-2 finishers from the same team. Here’s a link to pictures from Brewster…Boys Results….Girls Results

There were plenty of other invitationals this weekend too…Led by Nick Hughes, North Rockland went to the site of this year’s state championships, Sunken Meadow State Park, and came away victorious at the St. Anthony.

Something to look at

October

The story below ran in yesterday’s news section. I thought you might be interested in it:

IRVINGTON – Village officials and residents will rally for a walk Friday night to support the daughter of Mayor Erin Malloy, who was seriously hurt after her bike collided with a car last week.

Mairin Din, a freshman at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, collided with the vehicle Sept. 24 while cycling near the campus. She suffered serious head injuries from the accident.

Some more debate

October

If you click here you can take a look at the Section 1 rankings at armory track.

I figured it would be a could chance for some more debate and disagreement about where we think some teams are ranked. Enjoy!

Today in The Journal News

October
2

In today’s paper I have a notebook on how the Brewster boys team has been able to find success this season. I have another notebook that discusses how Scarsdale has proven to be one of the best team’s in Westchester. In Rockland my notebook talks about Clarkstown North’s success over the weekend.

On the girl’s side, Matt Ng wrote a notebook on the Dewitt Clinton Invitational with Bronxville and Ursuline. His Rockland notebook discusses the Nanuet youth movement.

And as promised, my article on Shelby Greany’s college decision.

New poll

October
1

I want to thank everybody for voting on the poll. It seems as though the Mahopac boys was the team people seemed to think could be the biggest surprise. And after a month of running it’s hard to argue the team’s success.

Mahopac is followed by Brewster, Yorktown and Horace Greeley. Interestingly enough all those schools are Class A schools and I think that shows the depth and the toss-up that this class race should be in a couple of weeks. The Bronxville boys were the top finished in Class C. Again, it’s hard to argue with that team’s success so far.

On the girls side, Nanuet and Pleasantville were the top two finishers. Again, it’s tough to argue these selections. Both schools are in an impossible class and county, but both teams have definitely proven to be very talented.

Decisions, decisions

October
1

After months of debate and trying to decide what college to attend Sufprovidence_logo_small.giffern’s Shelby Greany finally settled on Providence. She made her choice Monday night. There will be an article in tomorrow’s paper about her decision and why she chose Providence, which is currently the 13th ranked cross country team in Division I.

I’d like to congratulate Shelby on her decision. Picking a college is one of the tougher decisions to make and it sounded like this was her dream school all along. She has excelled on the track and around the trails in her past six years of running and has been one of the best and most consistent runners ever to come out of Section 1.

Top 10 (boys)

October
1

Before I unveil my rankings just a few things: I based the rankings on how the teams have done throughout the season and this past weekend. If a team didn’t have its full compliment of runners I have to assume it ran with who it’s going to run with at sectionals and counties.

Okay, so at this point of the season this is where I think the boys’ teams stack up:
