Sectional coverage in today’s paper

November
1

Stay tuned to the blog for more thoughts and stories from yesterday’s Section 1 races. Just like at counties, we wanted to give priority to writing as much as we could for the print edition of the newspaper, so we produced four stories chocked full of info and insight.

I wrote about Pearl River’s 30th consecutive sectional title and about Ursuline’s magical late-season run.

Dan wrote about Fox Lane’s ascendancy to a long-awaited sectional title and Suffern’s improbable sectional win against some of the the state’s best.

I can only speak for my coverage of the girls, but I feel there are plenty of other story lines, tidbits and quotes that I had to leave out of my print edition work. So sit back, relax, rest your weary legs, cram down some of your Halloween candy and please keep logging into the blog this weekend. And we’ll do our best to give all you dedicated XC’s fans some nifty extras.

Just about ignored the girls’ Class C race. Bronxville wins its 22 sectional title and 12th consecutive. Not Pearl River but not too bad and ignored totally. Also Caitlin Hudson follows in her sister Amanda’s “footsteps” with a sectional xc win – Amanda’s was in 2005 at Bear Mountain.

How about those Koalas – 2nd consecutive Class A title.

Just a few more decades and they can catch up to Pearl River and Bronxville.

Not a bad season though as they came back from their Disney victory and won every meet. They seemed to rise to the occasion both at Counties and Sectionals as most doubted their determination and ability.

Sullivan’s magical season continues with six wins in a row. She was the 2006 Class A Champion as a Sophomore. Her teammates responded to her leadership getting better with each win. As the only senior great things await this group.

A great day for many teams and people yesterday.
Pearl River incredible 30 years!! Bronxville continues to crank out more years of great running for a town that is one square mile. Ursuline looked great again, county champs made up of kids from all over the county, and now section 1 repeat champs.
Suffern boys big upset, well done.
North Rockland’s girls misfortune of a girl going down in the race turned into Arlington’s fortune of winning by 2.
Irvington over Dobbs was a fantastic race, DobbsRover2 motivated others in this race to help get somebody else’s team across the line before his own all season long.
Fox Lane’s up and down season was definately a new chapter yesterday with a big win. Many thought the A boys race would be a squeaker as well, it wasn’t.
Hickey continues to manhandle his competition.
Class D boys race had more than 1 team, too bad nobody there to watch.

    GoZola and I quote:

“Ursuline looked great again, county champs made up of kids from all over the county, and now section 1 repeat champs”.

Seems like there is some negative undercurrent here – FYI Ursuline has been a member of Section I from the mid-1970’s.

For a fact many of these girls travel great distances and spend many hours a week on trains and buses to get a quality Catholic college preparatory education.

Actually overheard an administrator from one of the schools they competed against who referred to them [twice] as a Team of All-Stars. That was a pretty sad thing to say. But to be expected when you do well.

  5. Magister Jacobus

    FYI:
    Westchester County 432.82 sq. miles
    Bronxville 1 sq. mile

  6. runner

    And your point?

Does Bronxville ever not get credit for having a fine program each year both in Class C and Statewide?

I guess being a Section I school for more than 30 years still doesn’t mean too much with some people.

    Especially when you do well!

    Whatever!

  7. MISSy2345

kind of off subject but, does anyone know why catholic/private schools(ursuline for example)are allowed to compete in the public school division???? There is a division devoted to them…

  8. runner

And Kennedy and Albertus Magnus and Lourdes and Keio and many other schools throughout the State in many different Sections. Goes back to what I said before that it only becomes an issue to some when the above mentioned schools do well – as I said most of the above schools have been Section I and NYSPHSAA members for many many decades.

Don’t see the point of all of this unless the grapes are tasting particularly sour today.

Again congrats to all the girls and boys teams and individuals who had some great races yesterday and best of luck to everyone who will be running at Sunken Meadow next weekend.

  9. Just sayin'

    “Magister Jacobus

    FYI:
    Westchester County 432.82 sq. miles
    Bronxville 1 sq. mile”———————————————FYI:

“Tuition for the 2009-2010 school year will be $13,800”

Just saying, we can all throw around interesting information. Doesn’t mean it has anything to do with anything really, does it?

Bronxville is small and exclusive; Ursuline is expensive. Seems to me like that limits the reach of each team.

Yet both have great running programs and wonderful girls who run their hearts out for their school. The girls are a credit to the sport; some of the parents maybe not so much- Magister…

  10. GoZola

sorry sensitive people, only making a point about how great everybody ran, and I think it’s not so bad that a team with many kids that do indeed spend many hours traveling, etc. to get to a school like Ursuline, or Keio, or Albertus Magnus, etc. wins a county title. Seems like an appropriate title for these teams when they do win, be kinda cool if Magnus won Rockland title, Ursuline girls county, Keio boys county (Iona not being part of section 1, I’ll leave them out of county meet even though they could win easier than a Keio), what about Putnam? who could do it down there? Lourdes in Dutchess could get the Northern county title for both I guess as it too is private catholic.

  11. P. King

Actually Go Zola2, the kids run fine on their own with their own inspiartion. The Bulldogs were the reigning champs and every one of their runners put in a super effort, from Saliani and Mathews sprinting in a fantastic last 200 meters, to Matt Menard willing himesilf over the line with severe leg issues, to Sam Lindberg raising his performance by a huge level in one race, to Zak Siegel holding off a pursuer at the end in a last gasp effort that brought his team from a tie-breaker loss to a one-point win. So Irvington gave a great effort, the Eagles congratualate them just as they turned out en masse for the rally for the Bulldogs’ Mairin Din.

But you GoTripper2, I suggest that you take you take your festering spew and go bury it in a sandpit. Three Eagles will be enjoying their runs at Sunken Meadows in support of Section 1 teams. And if area coaches and whatever you are want to get their kivvies in a knot about criticisms of rankings and the timing problems at meets and want to start hating on teams, that’s their sick problem. As it was, I can say that the “hateful” comments posted about the Fox Lane guys and the Dobbs Ferry girls getting dumped way down in the rankings turned out to be on the mark. Stew away, GZ

  12. GoZola

probably more people have a problem when these teams do well because some kids on the teams earn all county, all section but come from Bronx, Connecticut, New Jersey, etc. to help these teams and the public school kids win with the kids from their towns, cities, etc….pulic schools have issues always with keeping kids out of their schools that don’t live in their districs, private schools spend money on scholarship and endowment to recruit some of these same kids to help diversification efforts at their schools.

  13. GoZola

welcome back DobbsRover2!! Congrats to your crew, don’t think I was “stewing”, more along the lines of congratulating everbody, but Potato/PotAto !! You don’t seem like a very happy person considering all there is to be happy about.
All these kids and coaches deserve a big congratulations, lord knows they won’t get much recognition at their schools if soccer, field hockey, football are still playing in sectional championships.
You should swim up the river just a little bit from where you are DobbsRover2 and congrat. the kids from Ossining on the size of their team this year and the enthusiasm they showed finishing their season together as a pack yesterday. Their are a lot more story lines out there in this sport then the ones you get hung up on, like rankings (who cares, yesterday was all that mattered), timing (guess you never made a mistake in your life before, you must be perfect), etc.
Spend some quality happy time thinking of the good and maybe you will understand that many of the kids, coaches, and even us parents enjoy sport for sport, not just the competition…Carry on.

  14. P. King

Keep stewing GoZ, and glad the Ossining team is getting a team together, and maybe in a year or two you will be able to be tooting their horn over big accomplishments. In five years, Dobbs has gone from no program to a contender with kids having a lot of fun even when they lose the heartbreakers. And yeah, having kids in the States is a lot of fun. Second best moments I had at the meet was filling in our League buddies, the fledging Alex Hamilton team, about the rigors of Bowdoin for their D race battle. Unfortunately, no amount od description can prepare a kid for zigzag hill, but hey, they’ll be back in force next year.

And as I said, we all make mistakes, but three years in a row at the County is a travesty for kids who are working so hard and just want their correct times. They deserve better. And if you and the other naboobs here want to shrug it off and accept it, that’s your problem. Why don’t you go tell the guys in 2009 when they’re at the starting line that they’re not worthy of a decent timing system. It doesn’t take a lot to get correct results, most meets do it without any problem.

  15. GoZola

who didn’t get a correct time????
the backup timing system gave all the kids correct times from what I am told. Do you know something others do not?
Using the word “naboobs” makes you seem very old by the way.
When you are angry you begin to make many spelling errors.
Ossining has already had some great moments in XC history, they don’t need me to toot their horn.

  16. GoZola

2004 Mike Poleski, Ossining, NYS championships, 15th class A
2005 Mike Poleski, Ossining, NYS championships, 13th Class A
2006 Mike Poleski, Ossining, NYS championships, 16th class A
    3x ALL State runner.
This team was also state champions years ago I believe, so don’t think they are a start-up, they are just reorganizing.

  17. onefootinfrontofother

congratulations everybody that earned another week of running, well done. Let’s hope the kids can do some damage against some of those great teams from Section 2 and 3 next week, as well as the others. Last time state meet was on LI it was really good weather, kids jumping in the ocean after. Let’s hope for more of that. Stay positive, don’t let all the coaches and parents on here sniping at each other prevent you from doing your job. Many have nothing else to do, poor souls.

  18. onefootinfrontofother

    By the way GoZola:
    Ossining:
Robert Murray 4th in sectionals 1999 class A, team 3rd, followed by him going 16th at state meet, 6th in county, team 6th also.
    2000sectional champ B
    2000 County meet 2nd.
2001 team 8th at sectionals beating Fox Lane, Yorktown, JJCR, Harrison, etc..
Craig Menchin top 20 at County meet, team 14th
2002: Justin May 13th in county team 12th
    2003: Team 18th in county
    2004 team 8th at county
    2005 Poleski 2nd in A sectionals, McCormack 16th, team 7th and 8th at county
2006 Poleski is section champ and team 3rd
some of the county stuff back then was interesting as it included teams not in county meet now (Mahopac, Carmel, etc.)

  19. Runner

Why did the Ossining boys and girls finish as a huge pack on Friday? that confused me because wouldnt their coach get mad or did he tell them to to that?

  20. onefootinfrontoftheother

Most coaches tell their kids to finish as a pack, they articulate it a little better obviously so that the kids know he/she wants them to pack in the front of the race, not the back.

  21. Interested

The Ossining kids in both races were a disgrace to the sport and there school. It is obvious they did not want to run or were protesting or something. Their time would have been better spent in classes on Friday. That should be there last cross race ever. Not sure what the rest of you saw?

  22. Dan Doherty

Hey Matt, where is all that extra coverage you promised us.
Are you saving it for next years xc preview?

  23. RinRanRun

Ditto what Coach Doherty says. What about the girls?

  24. Runner

yea no offense to ossining, but when there boys came in as a pack they were all fooling around and talking.
