The running world in the Lower Hudson Valley with Dan Marra

Marine Corps

December
29

Unfortunately this past weekend, I was away and we could only cover one of the meets on the weekend – Pearl River. However, down at the armory there was some definite things to take note of.

The first and probably most important is Aki Bajulaiye of New Rochelle. Granted the 800 isn’t run that much over the winter, but the senior still finished second in 1:54.96 at Marine Corps. He finished behind Terrence Livingston of Great Neck who won in 1:53.36. Now, I didn’t see the meet, but from what I remember, Livingston is very fast and for Bajulaiye to finish behind him in less than a second is pretty good.I would definitely watch out for Bajulaiye as the season progresses.

While we’re on the New Rochelle kick, watch out for the Huguenot team as a whole. They also won the SMR and have a lot of quality athletes.

Other notes:

  • Fordham Prep’s John Horvath is worth watching. He cleared 13-6 again and if he continues to stay consistent at that height for the beginning of the season, by the end of the year he could be up to 14 and 15 feet.

  • Hackley’s Aaron Konigsberg is back after suffering a wrist injury late in the spring season. He cleared 13 feet in his first attempt back.

  • I’d keep an eye out from this kid from Sleepy Hollow – Geneviene Ruppiel. She won the long jump in 17-3 3/4. It will be tough for her to come away with a state title in the event, but 17 feet is a pretty good distance. She also took second in the triple jump in 36-1/2 feet. To do both jumps that well is very impressive.

That’s all for now, I’ll probably see most of you at West Point tomorrow.
