New Balance Games and other meets

January
25

Sorry for the late post, we had a doctor’s appointment to get too. But if you haven’t checked it out, click here to read my article on Chris Carrington’s victory in the invitational mile.

As Carrington said, this was the biggest win of his high school career. Carrington has had a lot of success in cross country and track the last two years, but yesterday’s win was so important. He maintained contact with the first pack for five laps, then he had one burst to get into that first pack at the 1,200 meter mark.

You could tell he was getting ready to move. With 300 meters left he had another burst and he took the lead. As the bell sounded Carrington just took off and finished in 4:19. His goal was to run 4:15-16, but a wain’s a win. The group went out in 2:15, which allowed Carrington to hang back and use his kick to blow everyone away.

Click below to hear some of my other thoughts from the meet:

  • Aaron Konigsberg cleared 14 feet again. You could tell once he gets over 14-6 he’s going to take off. 14 has not become an issue for him anymore.

  • Andres Montalvo can throw his name into one of New Rochelle’s keys to victory for the county meet. He could be a very important factor next Sunday if New Rochelle plans on winning the county title.

  • Mount Vernon’s Kaydon Davis and Robert Pope are the two best shot putters in Westchester and possibly the section.

  • Bronxville’s 3,200 relay team looked strong yesterday. It still has room to improve and the quartet hasn’t really run that much yet. This is a team that will without a doubt be peaking at the right time.

  • Don’t look now, but Ramapo may be back. Yesterday’s 800 meter relay time of 1:30 is what the team is used to running. It ran without Mike Abelard who was taking his SAT’s. I didn’t relaize this, but this was the team’s first time running at the armory. The team has defintely been taking it easy this season, but this could be a very big next two months for this group.

  • Jessica Tobin looked strong in the mile, but she definitely looks more comfortable in the longer distances. It takes some getting used to the speed and how much faster you need to get out in the mile than in the 3,000.

Penn State

  • Suffern made a trip down to Pennsylvania to run. The team had somewhat of a light meet, especially compared to its standards.

  • Shelby Greany won the mile in 4:57. The winning time at the armory was 4:55. Here’s guessing the track at Penn St. isn’t as good as the one at the armory.

  • The 3,200 relay team won in 9:58. It will be tough for the relay team to beat out Bronxville for the entry into the state meet. Bronxville was edged out at the line by this team last year. I don’t think that’ll be the case this season.

  • Janelle Clayton continues to clear 5-6.

  • Jen Clayton DNSed in the 200 and long jump. However, she did help the team take second in the 800 relay in 1:48.

  • Kevin McKenna won the mile in 4:25. I obviously didn’t see the race, but I would imagine it’s one of the best races he’s run this season.

That’s all for now. Any other thoughts or comments on the weekend’s meets?

yes they can. Not everybody can but if you are good then you should be able to

  3. Track Fan

Franklin Jacobs at 5’7” jumped 7’7”.

  4. Todd

But that is rare. It seems that the taller jumpers reach the higher marks.
