Yesterday’s NYCHSAA Sectional meet

January
26

The armory was host the CHSAA meet yesterday. And while the majority of schools in the meet are not in our coverage are, there are a few schools – Fordham Prep, Iona Prep and Stepinac that we do pay attention too.

That being said – it’s obviously very difficult to judge someone on their times from a team-scoring meet like this one because most athletes are tripling in events, however, there a a few observations I’d like to point out:

  • Fordham Prep is the most complete team in our area. I know it’s technically in the Bronx, but we still cover the school. And it’s location doesn’t take away from what this school accomplished. George Febles and his team all but dominated that meet yesterday in a 94-61 victory over Monsignor Farrell.

  • Speaking about Coach Febles, there’s a short Q and A with him at the armory website you should check out.

  • I feel as though this year’s Rams team, as opposed to last years, has not just depth, but talent. The accusation of these Catholic/Private schools is that they have so many athletes they’re bound to score points. But that’s not the case with this year’s Rams team. They have depth, sure, but they have kids who will challenge for a federation title – Zach Keefer, Wayne Seaton, John Horvath, Jon Annunziata – just to name a few.

  • Horvath has a definite shot at a federation title. He now has cleared the best height in the section with his 14-6 jump yesterday.

  • Maurice Easterling is slowly improving in the long jump. He had a jump of 21-11 1/2. I said before that he could be jumping 23 before the season ends and I think that’s a definite possibility.

  • It will be interesting to see what Iona Prep does at the county meet on Sunday. I will preview the county meet on the blog sometime in the next day or two.

  • Sean Halpin will need to get a lot of the team’s points, but he will need some help. Kyle Shepard and Shioma Obemeata are some of the names that will need to come up big for the Gaels.
