League 1-B Results!

April
30

More results!

Before we get to them though let me tell you about an event this weekend.

The St. Anthony’s Invitational on Saturday will be the host for the qualifying events for the Reebok Grand Prix on May 30th.

The four qualifying events are the girls 400 relay, girls and boys 1,600 relay and the boys 3,200 relay.

It should be a fun event with a lot of competition so go check it out if you are on Long Island.

Penn Relays recap

April
26

The Penn Relays are such a great experience. The atmosphere, the crowd, the stadium – I think it’s the best high school track meet to compete in. I was there yesterday and you can check out that story here.

I’ll have a post on Penn now and then I’ll be back and recap the rest of the weekend’s action a little later today. Unfortunately that will be my last post in about a week. The lovely people at corporate issued more furloughs this quarter and so I will be MIA this week. We’ll still have all the meets covered and Casey will continue to update the blog.

Now onto some of my thoughts:

Today in The Journal News

April
24

Sorry for the lack of posts. Unfortunately I was not able to go down to Philly Thursday or Friday, but I’ll be there on Saturday. In case you missed it, my colleague, Sam Borden was in attendance yesterday and he had a story in today’s paper about what it’s like running at Penn and the whole team aspect of running in a relay. You can check out the story by clicking here.

You can also click below to view the track and field results from yesterday. Hopefully I’ll see some of you down there tomorrow.

We have some action

April
22

After a couple day hiatus we have some track action. First, Wednesday is notebook day. In Westchester/Putnam, Fordham Prep holds the top spot, but Iona Prep and New Rochellere are right there. Also, keep an eye on Hen Hud. For the girls, there a bunch of talented teams led by Mount Vernon. Bronxville is off to a fast start, but you can’t discount Ursuline and New Rochelle. Lakeland/Panas is a team on the rise.

In Rockland, we have some movement on the boys’ side. North Rockland overtakes Ramapo for the top spot. Pearl River is a team gaining strength and Suffern is always in the mix. It’s the same thing on the girls’ side as North Rockland takes the top spot from Suffern. Those two teams falter and Pearl River will be right there.

Also yesterday there were a few dual meets.

New poll

April
21

Since it’s been a quiet day or two with Section 1 track and field as the rain wiped out a number of dual meets, I figured now is a good time to post a new poll. Again, I appreciate everyone that exercised their right to vote, but now I ask you to do it again.

What spring track meet do you look forward to the most? I listed some of the top individual meets and some of the championship meets, but as always feel free to add your own.

Weekend wrap up

April
19

Alright, sorry for the delay. I hope you checked out all the stories in today’s paper, including the all-star section. Now it’s time to wrap up all the other track meets from the weekend and talk about what happened.

New York Relays

If I remember anything from this track, Icahn Stadium tends to be a bit windy. It’s a nice place and even though it was a nice day yesterday, I’m sure the wind was swirling off the water yesterday.

I think Kyle Shepard from Iona Prep is cementing himself as the top steeple chase runner in the section. He hasn’t run the 2,000 yet, but Shepard has been dominating the 3,000. He won yesterday’s race in a blistering 9:36.73 – 14 seconds faster than anyone else in the state. Shepard continues to improve each season, but yesterday’s race probably vaulted him to the top of this event and an early favorite.

I hope you got the paper today

April
19

There was a lot of track and field in today’s paper, so I hope you picked it up. First, we’ll start with the articles on Red Raider. The Westchester/Putnam article focused on Ossinnig senior Jesse Drinks, looking very sharp this early in the season. The Rockland story, written by Casey Tolfree focuses on the success of the Ramapo team.

After you hopefully read those articles, the all-star editions came out today. In Westchester/Putanm, Athlete of the Season Breanda Crump rebounded from injury to help lead Mount Vernon to a county title. Then, for the boys, we have Claudio Delli Carpini constantly trying to improve his level of performance.

Across the bridge in Rockland, we have Shelby Greany continuing to prove she is one of the best runners ever to come out of Section 1. For the boys, it’s Ramapo’s Chidi Ezemma that year-in and year-out continues to show off his versatility on the track.

After you spend your Sunday checking that out, you can click here and look at the other athletes of the season plus the rest of the track and field first team. To view the Westchesetr/Putnam all-stars and first-teamers click here.

I’d like to congratulate everyone that made the first, second or honorable mention. And I’ll be back later to recap the weekend. Hopefully all this stuff will keep you occupied until I get back.

Red Raider continued

April
18

Another busy weekend of track and field and another weekend of some pretty impressive results.

I know we didn’t cover the New York Relays, but I’ll have a post tomorrow summarizing all of the weekend’s highlights. Also tomorrow, the long awaited all-star section comes out in the paper. I hope you pick up a copy and it’s to your liking.

Alright, so what happened today? Well I don’t know if anybody caught sight of Jesse Drinks. He was that marroon-tinted blur that was spotted running around the track. He could be in for a very big season. It’s too bad he didn’t run winter, but a 10.7 and 22.1 in the 100 and 200 is not a bad start to the season. He’s probably going to head to a Big East school to run, he said he was leaning towards UCONN.

He hasn’t even scratched the surface of his potential. he’s basically running this fast on pure ability. The weakest part of his form is probably his start. If you notice he rarely gets that explosion out of the blocks. If he can ever get that down, how fast can he run?

Red Raider Relays Day 2

April
18

Hey bloggers!

First off, I’m sunburned. I can’t seem to win with these relays. Last weekend I was so cold I thought I was going to die and now I’m sunburned. Oh well.

I was out covering the Rockland half of the meet. Dan will be on later to post about the Westchester accomplishments.

There was some great competition out there today. North Rockland’s Chris Carrington won all three of his registered events, the 1,600-meter run, the 800-meter dash and the sprint medley relay.

The North Rockland girls 4×400 relay team took first place with a time of 4:09.83.

Something did seem to be missing however as both Clayton sisters were out for the day because of injuries. The Mounties were able to rack up some third place finishes but nothing major besides Shelby victory in the 3,200 yesterday.

Ramapo was a big presence for Rockland today. The boys finished first in the 4×100 and the 4×400. They took second in the 4×200. Chidi Ezemma also took first place in the boys 400-meter dash. His twin brother Dozie took second.

As for the Ramapo girlsl, they took first place in the 4×100 as well, shaving two seconds off their first place time at the Nanuet relays last weekend. They finished second in the 4×200 behind New Rochelle.

Jarman Esperance from Nyack took first place in the 110 hurdles with a 14.52, a personal best for him. North Rockland’s Ryan Lacossade took second place with a 14.64. The event was close but there was no doubt that Esperance had the win.

Overall, the day was really successful with some impressive times. The nice weather also helped.

Red Raider (Day 1)

April
17

This has been a long day, I need to get up in a couple hours to go back to North Rockland and I just finished watching the movie Fireproof with my wife. If you never heard of it, watch Oprah.

But for the meet, it was a pretty exciting first day. I think the two best races of the day were, by far the boys’ 1,600 and the girls’ 3,200.

To have Chris Carrington and Mike Hickey go at it was interesting. Carrington ended up winning in 4:22 as he outkicked Hickey to the finish line. Hickey tried to get separation, but on the final lap Carrington was too close and was able to pass him with 300 meters to go. It was an intense race with Julian Saliani of Irvington having the lead for a little bit, but in the end, if Carrington’s close on that final lap, he’s tough to beat.

And in the 3,200, again it was Shelby Greany showing why she’s the top distance runner in the state. Her and Aisling Cuffe were back and forth. After Greany had the lead, she lost it too Cuffe, which with the wind, was a tactical decision by Greany, who, similar to Carrington outkicked Cuffe. The two of them went out in 5:12 and Greany came back in 5:15. Talk about pushing the pace. They went out as if they were running a mile.

Yesterday’s track stuff

April
16

I was over at Harrison High School yesterday for the Fulton Invitational. You could check out my story here. I always find this meet one of the more relaxed meets of the season. I really enjoy covering it.

If you didn’t see Chris Carrington yesterday on our VC Live show, it’s on demand and you can click here to get to the website.

One more thing from yesterday – at the CHSAA Relay Carinval the Iona Prep DMR team of Nick Athanasidy, Ayo Bajulaiye, Sean Halpin and Kyle Shepard took first in 10:27.1. Halpin ran a 3:04 1,200 leadoff leg. I believe this will be the same group running the 3,200 relay. It’ll be interesting to see what they run at Penn.

For the res of yesterday’s results, click below

Some higlights from another dual meet

April
15

The Hen Hud/Ossining/Peekskill dual will be in the paper tomorrow, but here are some highlights from that meet:

Jessie Drinks from Ossining eased up in both the 100m and 200m posting times of 10.6 and 22.9.  Hen Hud’s Zach Weisbrot beat Ossining’s Claude Easy in the 400m.  Zach’s time was 50.6 and Claude’s was 51.4

Cal Reuter broke Hen Hud’s 33 year old javelin record with his first toss of 164-7.  The previous record was held by John Macci from 1976 at 164-2.

Today in The Journal News

April
15

The first notebooks of the spring season are out today. Casey Tolfree has the Westchester/Putnam notebook with Mount Vernon as the top team. In Rockland, there are no surprises as North Rockland and Suffern are the two top teams.

For the boys, in the Westchester/Putnam notebook, Fordham Prep holds the top spot and we know about New Rochelle and Iona Prep, but keep an eye on  Mount Vernon. In Rockland, it’s Ramapo with the early lead, but watch out for North Rockland.

Yesterday’s meets

April
14

Below I posted the meet results from yesterday. Also, at the Iona Prep Invitational, Zach Keefer of Fordham Prep blazed to a 48.3 time in the 400 meter dash. It’s the top time in the state and a new school record for Keefer. He’s a good 600 runner indoors, but this is his event. If he stays healthy a sub-48 is definitely possible.

Mike Jennings ran a strong 800, taking first in 1:56.5. He’s another one that could be in for a big season. Jennings ran indoors for the first time and should be much further along than where he was last season. He’s also a big reason for the team’s 3,200 relay success.

Sad news

April
13

I’m sure some of you have heard, but long-time Irvington cross country and track and field coach Peter Oley passed away Saturday from colon cancer. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet him, but in talking with a number of coaches, athletes and friends of Oley, it’s hard to imagine anyway having a greater impact on the sport.

They’ll be an article on him in tomorrow’s edition, so be sure to pick up the paper. This info will also appear in the paper, but just in case you forget to pick it up:

Visiting hours will be at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry on Friday, April 17th, from 5-8 p.m.  A memorial service will be held at the Irvington Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 25th, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peter Oley Scholarship Fund, c/o Irvington High School, 40 North Broadway, Irvington, NY 10533

Weekend summary

April
13

Another busy weekend of track and field in Section 1. I’ll try and catch you up on all the times, distances, heights and happenings from the past three days. My colleague, Casey, spent some time talking about the Nanuet Relays, so be sure to check that out.

I’ll try and sum up some other stuff from the weekend as we get closer to the Red Raider Relays this weekend, which is probably the meet that really kicks off the season for Section 1 teams. And of course, we have the New York Relays this weekend as well. Before I get to far ahead of myself, here are some of the highlights from the weekend:

Nanuet relays

April
12

Hey,

So I am still drying off and thawing out from today’s relays at Nanuet but I think I can feel my fingers enough to type this story up for you guys.

First off, I have to give credit to all the athletes and coaches who were out all day in this weather because it was crazy.

To give you an idea of what went on… Suffern took the overall boys and girls title with a combined score of 130. They finished second in both the girls and the boys.

Don Bosco took first in the girls, while Shaker took first in the girls.

There was some great competition out there today.

Girls:

Tappan Zee led the 4×800 relay with a time of 10:18.2 and Clarkstown South took the 4×400 with a 4:17.3. Overall, a lot of different athletes and combinations got out on the track today. Ramapo finished first in the 4×100 with a time of 52.7 – an entire second faster than the second place team White Plains.

In the field events, Pearl River owned the long jump with a combined distance of 29-0.75, while Irvington took the high jump at 9-10. It seemed like everyone out there got a piece of the glory.

Today in The Journal News

April
12

That was a rough day to run yesterday. Cold, rainy and windy. And they call this spring track? Anyway, before I drag myself to our family outing and before you go anywhere today, be sure to check out the stories in today’s paper. I was up in middle-of-nowhere, New York. The people who reside there call it Cornwall. I have a story on the Green Dragon Relays focusing on North Rockland’s Nick Hughes coming back after a disappointing spring season.

Staying a little closer to home was my colleague, Casey Tolfree, who was across the bridge at Nanuet. Make sure you check out her story on Suffern’s early-season success. I’ll be back a little later today to wrap up the weekend. As for now I need to get ready to spend some QT time with the family. If you have any impressive performances from the weekend that we weren’t at or didn’t mention, feel free to throw them on the blog.

News from Cali

April
11

After slowly improving for much of the last few months, culminating with their race at NSIC, it’s time to take the Iona Prep 3,200 relay team as a serious threat. Unfortunately for them they have to race against Farrell and Fordham Prep who could break 7:50 in the event. But yesterday at the Arcadia Invitational Iona Prep ran an impressive 7:54.75 taking fifth. The same can be said with the Ursuline 3,200 relay team that took 6th in 9:33.7. Again, they have some real tough competition in the section with Bronxville and Lakeland/Panas can’t be overlooked either.

And now there’s another pole vaulter we should take note of – Michael Berg. He has been a consistent 12-foot pole vaulter for Iona Prep, but yesterday he cleared 13-1 1/2 out in California. Ursuline SMR took sixth in 4:18.77 and the 4 x mile took 10th in 22:15.48.

A little late, but here’s yesterday’s track meets

April
8

There weren’t that many meets yesterday, but I’ve listed the ones that took place below.

Also, since I see some comments about the 13.6 time Claudio ran, I figure I’ll throw in my two sense and see what you think. First with the wind, he wasn’t really running into it, it was more blowing side-to-side.

After the race concluded and he found out his time, he didn’t think he ran that fast and was surprised at the time. While that time is very fast, most of the back up timers and coaches standing at the finish that I talked to all had him high 13’s hand time. No, it’s not the 13.6 that the official had, but a few had 13.8. We all know hand times can always be a little suspicious, but there were quite a few people that had him clocked at under 14. It’s impossible to know how fast he really ran over the weekend, but if I had to take a guess it was probably somewhere around 13.8/9, which is still blazing, especially at this point of the season. Even if the time was off, how much are we talking? I don’t think it was half a second.

New poll

April
6

As usual, thanks for everyone that voted on the last poll, and there were a lot of you, 217 to be exact. The winner was Chris Carrington, racking up 16 percent of the vote. I can’t argue with that decision. There were a number of other athletes that were right with him – Claudio Delli Carpini, Shelby Greany, Wayne Seaton and the Bronxville relays were all within five percent. There was plenty of competition.

Now, onto a new poll. What team could surprise us this season? I tried to stay away from the favorites – Mount Vernon, Ramapo, Suffern. And I tried to pick one team per class. Again, you are not limited to these choices, so if you don’t like the ones I gave to you feel free to add your own. Thanks to everyone for reading, commenting and voting on the blog.

Weekend wrap-up

April
5

Granted the spring season techincally has gotten under way, anyone who was competing yesterday, probably still wished they were running inside the friendly confines of the armory. It was pretty cold out yesterday. And then the wind made it so tough.

Hopefully next weekend will be a little better, although it doesn’t look to promising. Even with the rough winds there were still meets going off. Here’s a little recap:

Be sure to check out today’s paper

April
5

Along with the track previews that finally made an appearance in the paper, I also attended my first track meet of the outdoor season. I was over at the New Rochelle Invitational watchingthe runners and jumpers have to compete in some pretty tough conditions. That mix of wind and cold yesterday was a pretty tough thing to deal with.

Now we’re on to the previews. First on the girls’ side, my colleague Casey Tollfree, focused on what the Mount Vernon girls are going to try to do to have an encore. For Rockland, it talks about how this Suffern team that has pretty much dominated the county for the last number of years, this is the final high school season for a lot of them. You can also check out her Rockland athletes to watch and her Wetschester/Putnam athletes to watch. She also has her season at a glance and three questions about the season.

On the boys’ side, in Rockland Ramapo – similar to Suffern – a lot of its runners will be entering their final season of a  group that has dominated Rockland track for a few years now. For Southern/Central Westchester there’s a New Rochelle program that is much more diverse than New Rochelle teams of the past. And in Putnam/Northern Westchester, the Brewster program has been slowly increasing its numbers and talent and now it’s just a step away from being one of the upper echelon of teams. After that, be sure to check out the Rockland athletes to watch and Westchester/Putnam athletes to watch. Make sure you read the season at a glance and the three questions about the season.
