Another busy weekend of track and field and another weekend of some pretty impressive results.
I know we didn’t cover the New York Relays, but I’ll have a post tomorrow summarizing all of the weekend’s highlights. Also tomorrow, the long awaited all-star section comes out in the paper. I hope you pick up a copy and it’s to your liking.
Alright, so what happened today? Well I don’t know if anybody caught sight of Jesse Drinks. He was that marroon-tinted blur that was spotted running around the track. He could be in for a very big season. It’s too bad he didn’t run winter, but a 10.7 and 22.1 in the 100 and 200 is not a bad start to the season. He’s probably going to head to a Big East school to run, he said he was leaning towards UCONN.
He hasn’t even scratched the surface of his potential. he’s basically running this fast on pure ability. The weakest part of his form is probably his start. If you notice he rarely gets that explosion out of the blocks. If he can ever get that down, how fast can he run?
Some other thoughts from the meet:
- What is with this Roller family? First Lance and now Brie Roller. Only a sophomore, but she’s one of the top runners in Westchester. She can run anything from the 200 up to the 8. Yesterday she won the 400. She got off to a blazing start, but she said around the final turn the wind was brutal.
- It’s going to be tough to qualify in the 3,200 relay for states this season. Fox Lane throws its hat in the ring with its 8:08. I still think you have to watch out for Lakeland as well. New Rochelle – who didn’t run it yesterday, but will at Penn could go sub-8 by the end of the season. That will be an intense race.
- Congratulations to Ashai McLean of New Rochelle for winning the pentathlon with 2,389 points. I know I’ve said this before, but the pentathlon is a brutal event. By the time they run the 800 these athletes are so spent.
- I think Aki Bajulaiye and Ruben Barajas found out how hard it is to race against Chris Carrington. The two New Rochelle athletes each had a chance to beat Carrington in the 800, but while both made a run at it, Carrington was to strong and had to good a kick.
- Watch out for Aki. He did it last year in the federation race. He has the ability to break a big run at any meet. A 1:57 is good, but he can break out a 1:54 I think at any meet. With him you never know when it’s going to come, but the abulity is definitely there.
- Even though Ramapo isn’t competing at Penn Relays – victories in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relay prove this team has the best group of sprinters in the section. Even though the team looks like it will be competing without Kevin Malivert and Nick Padilla for the rest of the season. Mike Abelard, Chidi Ezemma and Ryan Whitley all looked really strong.
- I was thinking about this today: Last year at Penn, Ramapo was an Abelard pulled hamstring away from most likely qualifying for the championship of America in the 400 relay. The guy limped down the final 50 meters of the race and Ramapo still qualified for the large schools finals. That just shows, you really never know when you’re going to get another opportunity for anything.
- Watch out for Nyack’s Jarman Esperance.
- Pearl River’s Angelica Gilsenan beat out Kaitlynn Cross of Suffern in the pole vault. Those two will probably go back and forth the whole season in the event.
- There’s a chance Janelle Clayton could be done for the season with a foot injury.
- Joe Fox - not surprsingly won the shot put with a throw of 51-11 3/4.
- I’m not really sure why the top two 800 relay teams were in the second heat, but New Rochelle edged out Ramapo – 1:47.26 to .28.
One other side note – how about those Yankees? Must have been nice paying 900 bucks for a ticket today? Think Jeter’s giving out refunds? Any hockey fans out there – nice win for the Blueshirts.
That’s all for now, but please feel free to mention or talk about anyting else from this meet or the New York Relays. As for now, I’m probably going to try and get some sleep. Hopefully I’ll see some of you again this weekend, I’ll be down in Philly. I’ve actually never had a cheeseteak, so if anyone has any suggestions, I’m listening.

Ramapo didn’t win the 800 meter relay, besides that great recap
Take a road trip. Visit Pat’s Steaks in South Philly (any time of day) for the very best Philly Cheesesteak.
New York Relays??
Rye looked pretty strong in the 4×8 running right around 8:10 without one of there stronger legs. Byram ran low 8:20’s, nothing spectacular. Tappan Zee was right behind them, but supposedly had two sub 2:00 legs.
Ramapo’s 800m relay team took second to Monroe’s, great job by Monroe.Once again Ramapo almost pulled off all 3 relays the 4×100m, 4×200m, and 4×400m.Last year it was the 4×400m they came up short in this year it was the 4×200 not bad considering that they are right on top of each other and it is almost the same kids running them almost back to back to back.I believe 3 years ago they won them all. or maybe 4 years ago, anyway great job to all the Gryphons who medaled and all the competitors from yesterday.North Rockland does a great job with the meet and we love those RAIDER DOGS!!!
