The running world in the Lower Hudson Valley with Dan Marra

Westchester County

May
16

New Rochelle pulled it out in both the boys and girls meet. The boys had to sweat it out as they got a 3-point victory. It came down to the hammer and the long jump – the two last events to be counted. Iona had a nine point lead late, but New Rochelle rallied to win.

The girls were really imoressive as they beat out Ursuline and Mount Vernon. The girls looked focus from the very beginning and the meet never really got that close as New Rochelle looked much better in the relays this season than they did in the winter. Congratulations to all the county winners. I’ll be back with more later.

Dan…Yes it is a small school and not many athletes participate in the county meet, because the coaches actually follow the standards, but to totally dismiss two first place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. nada thing in print wow. Did new Ro do that, NO, did bronxville or ursiline, mount vernon, Woodlands no none of those did. mmm which school was it, oh yeah It was SLEEPY HOLLOW.

I’m confused are you saying that only one athlete won both the long and triple jump or that only one athlete won multiple events?

If it’s the latter, I don’t have the results in front of me, but didn’t Jesse Drinks win multiple events? Charlotte Pope? Ihiechi Ohia-Enyia of Saunders? Do they not count? Maurice Easterling? He actually won both the long and triple jump. Sorry if I’m forgetting anybody. I’m not really sure what your point is.

Unfortunately not every athlete that wins an event or even multiple events can make it into the paper. There’s just not enough room. Drinks, Easterling, Ruppel – I would love have to mentioned all of them, but there just isn’t enough room.

one athlete from sleepy hollow won both the long jump and the triple jump. The point is when a small school does make a statement it should be mentioned. You recently did it with the rockland results. not just with the schools but with the athletes. Your comment .. we know about the Claytons and Greany.. and then went to mention some unknown(or under reported) athletes that excelled during the meet. That’s the point. And kudos to Pope, Esterling and Drinks and hopefully Miles(PLSVILL) is okay. Nice job by Sullivan on the steeplechase as well.

By the way in the staement…”I’m confused are you saying that only one athlete won both the long and triple jump or that only one athlete won multiple events?” Aren’t you saying the same thing here? The long jump and triple are two different events therefore if one athlete won both, that athlete won multiple events.

Anywhoooo just sticking up for some of the small less dominating schools and not taking away from the powerhouse schools. Congrats on thier programs!!!

where can we find the results of meet. It was not in Sundays paper. I did hear that Easterling won triple jump & long jump. Why was this not reported ??

  5. flanders

Crusader it is on the varsity central web page or armory track. As well as today,s paper. and yes he did. probably because it was not multiple events???? sorry couldn’t help myself.

flanders, you are correct, Ruppel did a tremendous job with her accomplishments this weekend. Sleepy Hollow is not all that small however, they are listed as 644 for enrollment classification which in D1 is still more than Lourdes, Pearl River, Byram Hills and Rye. It is also about 300 more than the Bronxville team you mention in your original post and 400 more than Hamilton. If you want to talk small schools look at the talent some of them are putting out on a REGULAR basis, not just one athlete that has a personal jumping coach. Valhalla only has 300 for entrollment classification and still has a discus thrower throwing 160’, a 6’2” high jumper, a 51 sec. 400 runner, etc…..lots of small schools have talent that doesn’t get mentioned but don’t use the size of the school as the excuse for it when you are D1.

anseladams – 2 athletes participated at the counties from sleepy hollow. And not sure of the difference between D1 and D2 but tink Sleepy is preety close. And if you look at the make of the student population, Sleepy is alot different than those schools you mentioned. Be that as it may, the point was that Sleepy did well as a team with two participants at the meet and there was no word. It was not an attack on Bronxville that has a great team or New Ro, which by the has quite a few coaches, Harrison, Rye or Pearl River. They are all great teams and worthy of print. It was the same arguement I had with the paper when they stopped printing 2nd and 3rd palce finishers at “deul” meets. It is just nice to see the little guy mentioned once and a while. Someone has a good meet lets see the name in print. I guess if space is limited than Dan has his hands tied So, no it was not about the size of the school, it was more about the accomplishemnt. And as Dan responded others did well and were not mentioned. I wish they were. He just doesn’t have the space. Having editors read theblog may help to change tihe situation. As for who has what coach who really knows what happens behind the scene. And really who cares? If we get to see records broken, times smashed and amazing hieghts and distances reached. So to the schools putting out great teams on a regular basis CONGRATS, and to that lone athlete on a small team CONGRATS as well. So Ansel lets work on getting the paper to mention the smallers schools and their athletes.
