New Rochelle impressive in victory

Then the girls went out and dominated the meet. You knew the Huguenots would have a better chance in the outdoor season because there were more throwing events and they certainly took advantage of that. Charlotte Pope was clearly the star of the meet. She won the shot put, discus and the hammer. Actually in the hammer, New Rochelle scored 28 points alone.

I think it was clear that New Rochelle was on top of its game right from the ver beginning. When Amanda Egbuta won the 100 hurdles – beating out Tameekia Cooper and Aesiha McDavid. That gave New Rochelle a real big boost and from there the team just took off.

Then of course you had the huge meet by Christina Hamilton. She didn’t win anything, but she placed in the 100, 200 and the triple jump. Again, it’s those performance that key a team to victory and it seemed as though New Rochelle was getting it all over the place. Amira Yeiser has really stepped up scoring points in the 400 hurdles and high jump. Then the team secured victory in the relays. The same relays that hurt New Rochelle so badly over the winter, helped the team win. They scored 20 points in the relays this time – they scored 5 in the winter.

Cap said that winning the league meet was really a big boost for this team. Maybe that’s all it was – a lack of confidence. But whatever the case, the girls looked awfully impressive in winning the county title

Here are some other quick thoughts about the meet:

  • Katie Sullivan looked very impressive for Ursuline. She won the steeplechase and took second in the 3,000. That’s a tough double and she performed very well in both.

  • I think it’s safe to say that Henrietta Miers is the best 800 runner this side of the river. She doesn’t lose in the event.

  • Chalk up another win for Brie Roller. The 400 is becoming her signature event. But she can run anything from the 200 up to the 8 and win.

  • She was injured constantly throughout the winter, but Ihiechi Ohia-Enyia of Saunders looked real impressive over the weekend. The Brown-bound senior from Yonkers beat two pretty stacked races in the 100 and 200. She ran a 24.93 FAT in the 200 after running the 100. She could be in for a nice finish to her season.

  • How about Gina Talt? That was a nice win for her in the 1,500. Again, there was some heavy competition, but Talt kept pounding away and went in to that race with a mission. Each time it looked like she was going to falter, Talt battled back and found a way to win.

  • Breanda Crump won the 400 hurdles preatty handily. This looks like it could end up being her event. I believe this is what she competed in when she first came on the scene as a freshman. She’s pretty good at it.

  • Big time performance by Genevieve Ruppel. The Sleepy Hollow senior won both the long and triple jump by well over a foot. There’s clearly nobody better in Westchester than her right now.

  • Irvington has some field event athletes thanks to an impressive performance by Megan Talay. Only a junior she won the high jump clearing 5-2.

  • I think it’s now safe to say that Carissa Leonardi from Lakeland/Panas is the best pole vaulter in the county and one of the best in the section. She easily cleared 10-6 to win the county title. The sophomore looks to be very promising in the event. This will be an interesting event to watch play out at state quals.

  1. Skeptic

How about 7th grader Mary Cain winning the 3000m by 10 seconds going 5:28 for the first 1500m and finishing up with a 4:57 1500m? This is after her 5:00.4 1600m anchor at Loucks.
