Dan -- Keep up the good work. We are fortunate to be in a section with plenty of very, very talented athletes. So,not every deserving kid is going to get the coverage desired by their parents or coaches and, yes, sometimes you overlook special performances. Whatever. Stuff happens. We get way more coverage then those in other parts of the state. If somebody feels their kid was overlooked, then they can post whatever they like on this blog.

I think that Hayley McMahon from Arlington deserves a little recognition for her 1500m win. She ran an amazing race and was not the favorite going in to it. She also broke a 22-year-old Dutchess County record. It should be known that she is ready to run even faster--so watch out for her at States. How do I know? Because she dropped a 66 sec last quarter at the Sec. 1 Class A Champs to finish win a 4:37.

When have I been critical of the DobbsFerry program Dan? Go back and read my blogs here and find where I mention them??? If the paper wasn't around where would we blog? Perhaps on Dyestat or Letsrun, do you not know of them?
As for affiliations, would it change the way you report? Probably not, so why bother. I'm affiliated with my daughters school, the school I work at, the school I give money to every year, the school I graduated from, the school I worked at for many years, the schools that don't speak up for themselves, and many more.
As for taking instructions from you to stick to "coaching" it would lead me to believe you have had your I.T. guys go into the system to see who is blogging, because by using a name like HollyGOlightly it certainly doesn't say where anyone is or what they do....tells me you don't really want OPEN blogging on here.....care to reveal the names of everybody else that has been critical or just the ones that have tried to be consistently critical of you????? Would you reveal your sources if you wrote a piece about steroid use in major league baseball and had sources that you quoted????
I'll stick to "coaching" if that is what you think I do and you stick to "reporting" if that is what you think you do.
If I am a div. 2 coach and you feel you have been criticized maybe you should poll the D2 coaches to see if they feel like they have been overlooked by your paper for track for the last 2 years. You were criticized last year for your coverage of state qualifiers by a lot of people and again this year, yet you feel the need to believe I am the only disenting voice? I am not FAN who obviously gets coverage and kisses up to you but there are more parents and coaches who feel your coverage lacks in many ways.....I just happen to have some time to blog about it, but if you would like me to stop criticizing you I will, it will be nice to read from all of your fans how great you are, isn't that what journalism is all about, the writer feeling good about himself?
Have a good time with that.....

Holly,

You're always so critical - about me, the paper, other programs. It's amazing how you can be so critical about the Dobbs Ferry program and yet you don't let anybody know what Division 2 program you're affiliated with. You complain about The Journal News and me and that's fine. But if the paper wasn't around, first who would cover track and second, where would you be able to talk about the sport so freely like this? I don't know of any other Section 1 track blogs. Do you?

If you want to talk about the sport, fine. If you want to criticize me, fine. But don't hide behind a name. At this point it would really be better if you stuck to "coaching" that Division 2 team of yours.

Dan, it is apparent you take naps when you write as well, the sopomore did not cleas "11" feet in the high jump as you wrote above, that would be a "pretty impressive feat as well". Esperance and Lacossade in the hurdles, great story, too late though, you missed the paper on that one. Here goes the "space limitation" argument again. I don't care how much space you have, write a good article.
As for making fun of lymes disease, get real. You need a sense of humor if you take that as a jab at anybody that has it,
In today's article you wasted an entire sentence (doesn't seem like much until you start throwing around your pity story about being limited with space) on "Sarmiento has been running track since middle school, but standing on the line waiting for the race to begin, she couldn't help but feel a little nervous". That is 27 useless words. If she is a freshman as your headline reads "Harrison freshman takes event...." they we can figure out she was in middle school last year and if she is at the state qualifier then we also can assume she is nervous while standing on the starting line, find me one athlete last night that wasn't nervous. In 27 words I could have read that --only a sophomore, Palermo of Bronxville improved his best throw by over a foot to win the D2 shot put and qualify for his first state meet. OR ....Irvington made a run at qualifying in the 3200 M relay and were able to get past a strong Pawling team to earn their spot at the state's....OR.....Bronxville's Dayton Flannery, just a freshman, qualified for his first state meet in track by winning the 3000 steeplechase (less than 27 words but still more of a story than a girl having run in middle school and being nervous, if you wanted a story about a middle school runner you had Young of Nanuet, Cain (7th gr) of Bronxville, Rizzo (8th grade qualified in steeple) of Bronxville, etc.
You missed talking about the Valhalla triple jumper, believe he qualified in HJ as well, then was on their 4x1 that beat out Bronxville to go....
Rachel Kim of Bronxville winning 400 hurdles to defend her title from last year. Would have fit in nicely in your article since you concentrated on the D1 race.....
lots of stuff to cover with all the events and 2 divisions, I give you that, but at least cover them...
as for listing the winners and making it look like "glorified results" it would almost be better, at least we would get a sense of who is going to the state meet....
maybe you could trade photo space for writing space, do we need to see a picture of the athletes if there is a photo gallery on line? Or maybe a good caption under the photo, instead of "Brittany Brown competes in pentathlon" it could give information like "D2 winner, Brittany Brown competes in pentathlon".

Xc Fan,

You got me. I actually don't watch the meet. When I arrive at the track I walk into the crowd and close my eyes for the next five to seven hours until somebody taps me on the shoulder and tells me it's over. Now that my secret's out, I'm not sure what I'll do.

And Holly, don't make light of lime disease, it's actually a pretty serious illness. Both my sister and cousin had severe cases, luckily they have recovered, but they still suffer some of the side effects.

Also, I just want to respectfully disagree with your assessment of the first day of qualifiers. I think Claudio's a great athlete, and it's really unfortunate how his season ended, but that's not the story of the meet. How about the fact that Jarman Esperance and Ryan Lacossade both qualified for the hurdles? Be sure not to diminish their accomplishments. And I thought a sophomore clearing 11 feet in the high jump - a personal-best - in order to qualify for states is a pretty impressive feat as well, but what do I know.

I also just want to clarify one other point you made. In a newspaper, as I 'm sure you know, we are limited in how much space we have. And if I listed every qualifier in my story, it really wouldn't be a story, it would just be glorified results. Therefore, and this is the part about covering track that makes it so difficult, I need to decide who to mention in the story. I can't mention 10 different winners in my story - there just isn't enough room. And I hope people understand that.

I would love to have unlimited space to give to all who qualify for the state meet, but unfortunately that's not realistic. By all means criticize me all you want, but I just want you to be aware that it's inconceivable for every qualifier or every winner of every event to make it into the article. I wish I didn't have to keep athletes out, but I do. And I hope people understand why that's the case.

stories from the meet:
Dan won't get to cover this, he admits, after all that he can only list the winners till he runs out of room. (FYI: I've decided to start boycotting some of the advertisers in the Journal News and letting them (advertisers) know why, until JN can begin to cover the sport correctly) I don't want to hear that he covered the winners when he didn't: where was the winner of the high jump, long jump, 100 for D2, Discus, etc.etc.etc.etc.
If you are not going to cover them, then don't say you couldn't cover the Bronxville girl because you ran out of room listing the winners (last year you said D2 didn't get coverage because there were faster kids in D1 that won, Bronxville girl was faster in second place than the WINNER in D1 that you mentioned.
Anyway, onto my readers.......
Tonight, another very long night, can we all agree that having girls at 6;00 in 1500 at state qualifier is a shame. that is a time that wouldn't be great at a modified meet for some schools, and to have all those girls running tonight was crazy.
200:D2, Recine of Bronxville won to make state in his second event.
D1, missed the finish of this one.
1600: Saliani cruised to the win in D2 at 4:30 with Bronxville boy at 4:35.
Carrington took care of business in the D1 race, putting away a very solid field.
1500: D2, not sure, looked like Young of Nanuet at about 4:48.
D1, Gamboli of North Rockland for the win.
400: D2, Woodlands boy under 49 I think, was it Sainvil?
Hunter of Pawling also under standard and will go to state meet.
D2 girls: missed the race, anybody see it?
400IH: Big upset in girls race, frosh Sarmiento of Harrison wins this race, great debut on a big stage for her.
D2, Kim of Bronxville repeats as D2 winner, after chasing down the Woodlands girl that looked like she was a 300 Hurdler, any other state and she would be golden.
D2 boys, Steel of Nanuet wins, D1 looked like Weisbrot of Hen Hud was beaten at the line but has standard, not sure which guy got him
Shot: D2, soph from Bronxville throws 45'6" to win and in D1 Fox and Davis made the team.
4x8:
Girls: North Rockland girls win, Suffern second in D1 and has standard.
D2 Bronxville (finishing in 2nd position in overall race) wins and Pawling has standard
Boys: New Ro for the big win under 7:50, with Arlington 2nd with standard
Irvington wins D2 and Pawling has the standard
4x1:
D2, only 2 girls teams enter and Woodlands won.
Valhalla beats Bronxville at line, Bronxville misses standard by .02 in boys race
D1 races I missed the finish.
4x4:
D2 girls: Bronxville at about 4:00 wins
D1 girls, looked like the mt vernon #3 girl fell down on track, Suffern for the win I believe and Ursuline closing
Steeple:
D1 boys: Kane of TZ for win, McKenna of Suffern second with standard
D2 boys: Flannery of Bronxville winner
D1 girls: can you guess? Shelby Greany for a blow out
D2 girls: Sami Jorgenson of Pawling wins, 8th grader Meredith Rizzo of Bronxville got the standard.
waiting for more............

D2 boys, Steel of Nanuet wins, D1 looked like Weisbrot of Hen Hud was beaten at the line but has standard, not sure which guy got him
Shot: D2, soph from Bronxville throws 45’6” to win and in D1 Fox and Davis made the team.
4×8:
Girls: North Rockland girls win, Suffern second in D1 and has standard.
D2 Bronxville (finishing in 2nd position in overall race) wins and Pawling has standard
Boys: New Ro for the big win under 7:50, with Arlington 2nd with standard
Irvington wins D2 and Pawling has the standard
4×1:
D2, only 2 girls teams enter and Woodlands won.
Valhalla beats Bronxville at line, Bronxville misses standard by .02 in boys race
D1 races I missed the finish.
4×4:
D2 girls: Bronxville at about 4:00 wins
D1 girls, looked like the mt vernon #3 girl fell down on track, Suffern for the win I believe and Ursuline closing
Steeple:
D1 boys: Kane of TZ for win, McKenna of Suffern second with standard
D2 boys: Flannery of Bronxville winner
D1 girls: can you guess? Shelby Greany for a blow out
D2 girls: Sami Jorgenson of Pawling wins, 8th grader Meredith Rizzo of Bronxville got the standard.
waiting for more….........

"PROM"

Never thought of that! The minute you knew the prom date, I would have asked the school to change it! Will tell you a story this afternoon that you will enjoy.

"QUESTION FOR JUMP FAN

"If in the LJ you do not compete but have the standard and beat the second place jumper can you still be picked to go to the states?"

Unfortunately, no. You have to have competed in the state qualifier to go to the state meet. But, if trying to qualify beyond the winner, the highest-ranked finisher -- who also has the standard -- can go to States. Since we have Warwick Fast Times and Eastern States before the state meet, there are two more opportunities for athletes to make the standard, but, again, you have to have competed in the qualifier.

"Don’t really understand the 'standard' stuff."

Really horrible system. Rumor is that it will be changed yet again next year, to be the same as indoors, where we actually pick the best athletes, as opposed to the best athletes according to ZIP code! The inequities are unspeakably bad. But, it's been that way for years, and no one seems to care. Best I not get started!

"all results on armory site by the way."

Saw them, thanks. Meet had a very subdued tone to it. Didn't feel like past meets. Maybe the lateness; maybe the weather. But, it was definitely "different."

See you this afternoon.

O.K. Story about the meet:

In the 110 HH Claudio DelliCarpini, one of the favorites before his hamstring injury had to pull out after only 2 hurdles and was not in the long jump (he had the best jump coming in).
Girls 3000 D2 was a great race, all the girls staying together for the first mile, then dropping one before the pack started to race for the finish line. 7th grader Mary Cain of Bronxville made a move around Jelenik (Sp?) of Pawling who made the whole race by setting a good pace for the pace. Sami Jorgenson of Pawling started to shift into a new gear with a lap to go, catching onto the heels of Cain with 100 meters to go and nipping her at the line with a great time for both, a 23 second PR for Cain.
Boys 800 had so many good kids with the qualifying standard in D1 that you knew it was going to be a race to the line and Aki Bajulaiye went in knowing what he had to do. Aki started to put the field away with 150 meters to go in the race. The race behind for 2nd place was the most exciting race, as the Nyack and White Plains boys battled to the line.
No idea what happened in girls shot put, as it was in a different time zone across the pasture and Dan Marra had shorts on apparently and didn't want to get limes disease walking through the fields to see any of it.....sorry ladies, you miss out again.
Boys high jump looked to be just that, very high. That Arlington kid was skying yesterday and the Valhalla kid and Hamilton kid both qualified in boys D2 (Marra didn't get to see that apparently either, sorry boys).
Sad story in boys 100 for D2, as Peterson of Pleasantville, who had the standard and should have been a lock to get in, went crashing to the track with the same hamstring problem that plagued him at the county meet in the 200.....too bad for a nice kid who is a senior. The Irvington boy looked good in just missing the standard by .1
Girls high jump D2, I think the two Irvington girls qualified as they both had the standard (wouldn't know because the local reporter wasn't reporting on this event).
D1 girls high jump started with a scare, as the Scarsdale jumper went down hard after slipping on a wet spot in warm ups. Don't know results, don't look in paper to find them, you won't.
Pentathlon standings after day 1.....your guess is as good as mine.
Day 2 today, what to watch for:
200: D1 If all of the 7-9 boys with the standard show up it will be a battle for both spots.
D2: Nat Recine of Bronxville comes in with the fastest time of 22.2 and has the standard along with Peterson of Pleasantville (who went down with hamstring problem yesterday and is doubtful for today). Woodlands has some runners that could take a crack at the race as well as Pawling's Hunter, Dobbs Ferry's Shortt, Valhalla's Avant, and Dover's Joseph.

1600: Saliani has the standard in D2 and can cruise for 2nd or go for the win.
Others that may show up in D2 to at least try to challange could be Bronxville's Dayton Flannery, Dover's Cody Orton, Valhalla's Matute, Dobbs Ferry's Wortner brothers and Mashalov, Bronxville's Yoo.
D1 hs Carrington of N. Rockland with the standard as well as Muller of Arlington. Hickey of Pearl River is only 2 sec. off the standard and may take a crack at it, as he has already won the 3200 and the pressure of qualifying is now off. Others looking to contend will be Dapice of White Plains, McKenna of Suffern, Kane of TZ, and teh Fox Lane kids (but I bet they save for 4x8).

1500: D1 could be another good race, as the North Rockland girl will be a favorite, Mamaroneck has one or two that could steal it, Arlington girl just popped a great race recently and can take the whole thing.
D2 will be a race between Pawling Jelenik, Bronxville (any one of at least 5 he has under 5:00 that may enter), JFK, Lazare of Pleasantville.

Steeple:
D1: McKenna of Suffern has the standard and therefore, probably will not be in 1600. Hughes of N. Rockland will make a run at McKenna and the 2 sec. improvement he needs to get the standard.
D2: Who will run? Bronxville and Pawling had 5 each at the C meet, Dover has some distance runners that may do it.

400: D2: starting here is easiest as Pawling runner has the standard and broke 50 sec. already a couple of times this year, only a freshman......Valhalla has Felipe that may run (he won 800 yesterday and has nothing to lose by running).
Woodlands will have a runner that can run this event, but will they hold out for the relays?
D1: 6 kids have the standard for boys in D1, who will show up and run is the question or who will wait for relays?
Ramapo has 3 with the standard, but with 3/4 of a great 1600 relay I would bet they hammer a great 1600 relay instead... but you never know.

400IH: Only Nick Steel of Nanuet has the D2 standard and unless the Valhalla kid runs, this will be no contest.
In D1, 3 have the standard and should be a battle between Whitley of Ramapo, Weisbrot of Hen Hud, and Raeburn of Beacon, with Kleber of Suffern looking to pull off the upset.

Relays:
4x800: D2 Bronxville ran 9:09 this year already and didn't run any of their A team in the open 800 yesterday so I would put my money on them in this one. Pawling dipped under the standard as well and will be looking to get a finish in this race as the only other team with the standard.
D1: Suffern will be almost fresh, only Shelby will have run before this one so they are obviously looking to go for a good time and run away with the title. Ursuline could field a team, although Katie Sullivan won 3000 and will, no doubt, be in steeple, asking a lot of her to do relay on top of all of that. North Rockland can field a quality team, as well as Mt. Vernon.

Boys:
D1: Fox Lane, New Rochelle, Rye, Arlington, Brewster, North Rock,????
My money is on New Rochelle with Bajulaiye hammering another 1:54 like yesterday.

D2: Pawling, Pawling, Pawling, unless Irvington takes a run at them.

1600R:
Girls D1: Mt Vernon should win this one.
D2: Bronxville and Woodlands have the standard I believe, so look for both of them to get through to states.

Boys:
D1: Ramapo. Ramapo...Ramapo. and Mt. Vernon will be on the line at State meet.
D2: Pawling has the standard and should make the trip, Dover could put a sub 3:30 team on the track and try to steal this one, better get away from Pawling early with Hunter anchoring, he can bring it home under 50 seconds. Woodlands is a sleeper but could field a good team.

400R:
D1 Boys: Ramapo has the standard and the others will try to beat them or not get through.......
D2 Boys: Bronxville missed standard by .1 at the C meet and will look to try to improve on that so they can make it back to states this year..... Valhalla will be gunning for them again, as will Woodlands......

I agree, Cain's run was very impressive and for a seventh grader to run 10:12 is a great accomplishment. But in my defense, with all the winners from Westchester I have to mention them first in the story until I run out of room.

The other problem with the race was that the winner - Samantha Jorgensen - is from Pawling, which is out of our coverage area.

How about seventh grader Mary Cain of Bronxville running 10:12.08 to get her spot at states and maintain her hold on fastest time in the 3000m in Westchester? Never mentioned her county win either.

Does anyone know why Genevieve Ruppel wasn't at the meet, in the D1 LJ, and whether she plans to be in the TJ tomorrow?

Could be an interesting event, since it is unlikely that Jen Clayton will compete, and no one else in the section has the 36-6 standard except Olivia Stevens, of Lourdes.

abelard wasn't really trying. he didn't even use blocks for his start in the 100 and he looked like he just wanted to finish with a time good enough for states
