After a 12 hour day I’m a little tired, so this will be a quick post, but I’ll be back on tomorrow to give you some of my thoughts on the weekends results. Since I’ve been on the track and field scene this was by far the most impressive weekend of overall performances by Section [...]

Today in The Journal News

May
6

It should be an interesting week next week with county meets coming up. Today in the paper we have our weekly notebooks. In Westchester, Casey has Mount Vernon on top with New Rochelle, Bronxville and Ursuline close behind. I would be on the look out for an ever-improving Lakeland/Panas team. In Rockland, the situation became [...]

Shelby Greany does it again. The Providence-bound senior set the national record in the steeplechase tonight as she took first in the Cornwall Steeplefest in 6:33.7.

FYI – the previous record was held by Marie Lawrence of Reno in 6:36.05, the state record was previously held by Lindsay Ferguson (Saratoga) with the same time and Kara [...]

Penn Relays recap

April
26

The Penn Relays are such a great experience. The atmosphere, the crowd, the stadium – I think it’s the best high school track meet to compete in. I was there yesterday and you can check out that story here.

I’ll have a post on Penn now and then I’ll be back and recap the rest of [...]

Sorry for the lack of posts. Unfortunately I was not able to go down to Philly Thursday or Friday, but I’ll be there on Saturday. In case you missed it, my colleague, Sam Borden was in attendance yesterday and he had a story in today’s paper about what it’s like running at Penn and the [...]

We have some action

April
22

After a couple day hiatus we have some track action. First, Wednesday is notebook day. In Westchester/Putnam, Fordham Prep holds the top spot, but Iona Prep and New Rochellere are right there. Also, keep an eye on Hen Hud. For the girls, there a bunch of talented teams led by Mount Vernon. Bronxville is off [...]

College signings (Updated)

April
21

As I said in my previous post, it’s been a quiet few days for track. I figured now is as good as time as any to take a look at where some of these senior athletes will be competing next year. There’s a lot of talent this year and below I listed where a number [...]

New poll

April
21

Since it’s been a quiet day or two with Section 1 track and field as the rain wiped out a number of dual meets, I figured now is a good time to post a new poll. Again, I appreciate everyone that exercised their right to vote, but now I ask you to do it again.

What [...]

Weekend wrap up

April
19

Alright, sorry for the delay. I hope you checked out all the stories in today’s paper, including the all-star section. Now it’s time to wrap up all the other track meets from the weekend and talk about what happened.

New York Relays

If I remember anything from this track, Icahn Stadium tends to be a bit windy. [...]

I hope you got the paper today

April
19

There was a lot of track and field in today’s paper, so I hope you picked it up. First, we’ll start with the articles on Red Raider. The Westchester/Putnam article focused on Ossinnig senior Jesse Drinks, looking very sharp this early in the season. The Rockland story, written by Casey Tolfree focuses on the success [...]

Red Raider (Day 1)

April
17

This has been a long day, I need to get up in a couple hours to go back to North Rockland and I just finished watching the movie Fireproof with my wife. If you never heard of it, watch Oprah.

But for the meet, it was a pretty exciting first day. I think the two best [...]

I was over at Harrison High School yesterday for the Fulton Invitational. You could check out my story here. I always find this meet one of the more relaxed meets of the season. I really enjoy covering it.

The Hen Hud/Ossining/Peekskill dual will be in the paper tomorrow, but here are some highlights from that meet:
Jessie Drinks from Ossining eased up in both the 100m and 200m posting times of 10.6 and 22.9.  Hen Hud’s Zach Weisbrot beat Ossining’s Claude Easy in the 400m.  Zach’s time was 50.6 and Claude’s was 51.4

Today in The Journal News

April
15

The first notebooks of the spring season are out today. Casey Tolfree has the Westchester/Putnam notebook with Mount Vernon as the top team. In Rockland, there are no surprises as North Rockland and Suffern are the two top teams.

For the boys, in the Westchester/Putnam notebook, Fordham Prep holds the top spot and we know about [...]

Yesterday’s meets

April
14

Below I posted the meet results from yesterday. Also, at the Iona Prep Invitational, Zach Keefer of Fordham Prep blazed to a 48.3 time in the 400 meter dash. It’s the top time in the state and a new school record for Keefer. He’s a good 600 runner indoors, but this is his event. If [...]

Sad news

April
13

I’m sure some of you have heard, but long-time Irvington cross country and track and field coach Peter Oley passed away Saturday from colon cancer. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet him, but in talking with a number of coaches, athletes and friends of Oley, it’s hard to imagine anyway having a greater [...]

Another busy weekend of track and field in Section 1. I’ll try and catch you up on all the times, distances, heights and happenings from the past three days. My colleague, Casey, spent some time talking about the Nanuet Relays, so be sure to check that out.

Today in The Journal News

April
12

That was a rough day to run yesterday. Cold, rainy and windy. And they call this spring track? Anyway, before I drag myself to our family outing and before you go anywhere today, be sure to check out the stories in today’s paper. I was up in middle-of-nowhere, New York. The people who reside there [...]

News from Cali

April
11

After slowly improving for much of the last few months, culminating with their race at NSIC, it’s time to take the Iona Prep 3,200 relay team as a serious threat. Unfortunately for them they have to race against Farrell and Fordham Prep who could break 7:50 in the event. But yesterday at the Arcadia Invitational [...]

A little late, but here’s yesterday’s track meets

April
8

There weren’t that many meets yesterday, but I’ve listed the ones that took place below.

Also, since I see some comments about the 13.6 time Claudio ran, I figure I’ll throw in my two sense and see what you think. First with the wind, he wasn’t really running into it, it was more blowing side-to-side.

After the [...]

New poll

April
6

As usual, thanks for everyone that voted on the last poll, and there were a lot of you, 217 to be exact. The winner was Chris Carrington, racking up 16 percent of the vote. I can’t argue with that decision. There were a number of other athletes that were right with him – Claudio Delli [...]

Weekend wrap-up

April
5

Granted the spring season techincally has gotten under way, anyone who was competing yesterday, probably still wished they were running inside the friendly confines of the armory. It was pretty cold out yesterday. And then the wind made it so tough.

Hopefully next weekend will be a little better, although it doesn’t look to promising. Even [...]
